Plot Summary
Noah Clayton, a miserly, gout‑ridden older costermonger, lives with his daughter Liza. Young costermonger Henry Hawkins and former boxer‑turned‑boxing teacher Bill Brown both court Liza; Clayton favors the wealthier Bill. Liza loves Henry, but Bill lures her with gifts and a night at the music hall, provoking Henry’s jealous challenge. Henry vows to fight Bill, yet Liza warns him of Bill’s strength. The confrontation ends with Hawkins knocked out and tended to by his landlady.
