Bill Austin is a struggling writer living with his wife Bertie and their daughter in a cheap apartment. His agent Lucinda sells his manuscript and arranges a Broadway adaptation, prompting a move to a new house in Connecticut. While Bill works on the play, Bertie befriends neighbor Fran and Fran’s boyfriend Wylie, whose gossip fuels her jealousy over Bill’s close relationship with Lucinda. Seeking retaliation, Bertie flirts with Gar Aldrich, an actor in Bill’s production, leading Bill to confront and punch Gar.
