After his initial invasion of the Wu Shi monastery is repelled and peace negotiations collapse, Shao Kahn shifts his strategy and petitions the Elder Gods to sanction a decisive contest. A formal tournament gives him a sanctioned path to conquer Earthrealm without sparking a full realm-wide war that could draw the Elder Gods against him directly. By forcing Raiden into a sanctioned Mortal Kombat, Shao Kahn frames his conquest as a legal outcome rather than an outright invasion.

Shao Kahn's opening invasion of the Wu Shi monastery sets up the stalemate that makes a sanctioned, high-stakes rematch his only viable route to total victory.

Raiden relinquishes his godhood so that he can fight Shao Kahn on equal footing inside a contest whose rules are enforced by the Elder Gods. As an immortal thunder god, his standing in a sanctioned Mortal Kombat would be invalid, and Shao Kahn could claim any victory was illegitimate. By becoming mortal, Raiden accepts the same risks as every Earthrealm warrior, which is the only way the Elder Gods will honor the outcome.

Earlier, Raiden had watched over Earthrealm from a distance, but his decision to step into the arena signals the personal stakes he is now willing to bear.

Shinnok blames Scorpion for the death of Quan Chi and uses that grudge to manipulate him into returning to Earthrealm. The crucial twist is that the last Kamidogu fragment, a relic that can unlock Shinnok's prison, is embedded inside Scorpion's body and bonded to his soul. Shinnok hires the Lin Kuei to hunt Scorpion so the relic can be extracted and delivered, using Scorpion as the unwitting key to his own release.

Shinnok's first appearance already marks Scorpion as both a target and a tool, long before the Kamidogu's true location is revealed.

When Kuai Liang and Smoke are summoned to the Lin Kuei temple, they witness their peers being subjected to cybernetic biomodification in exchange for raw power. Horrified by what the clan has become, Liang flees and reclaims his older brother's legacy, becoming the new Sub-Zero as an act of defiance. Taking the name is a direct rejection of the Lin Kuei's path, signaling his break from the grandmaster's orders.

The first glimpse of the cyberized Lin Kuei warriors is enough to make Liang recoil, planting the seeds of his rebellion before he ever throws a punch.

The Kamidogu are ancient relics that hold the concentrated power of the realms, and Shinnok needs the final fragment to break free and resurrect the One Being. Because the last fragment is bonded to Scorpion's soul, every faction that chases Scorpion is really chasing the key to cosmic-level destruction. Whoever controls the Kamidogu controls the balance of every realm, which is why the Lin Kuei, Shinnok, and Earthrealm's defenders all converge on it.

Raiden warns that the relic holds dangerous power in the wrong hands long before the dockside battle makes that threat real.

Kitana has spent the entire film serving Shao Kahn as his stepdaughter and leading his invasion force, but witnessing the brutality of the tournament and her father's willingness to kill even his own champions pushes her past her breaking point. After defeating Raiden, she directly attacks Shao Kahn in open defiance, choosing loyalty to Earthrealm and her own conscience over her position in Outworld's court. Though she is beaten back, the rebellion permanently severs her allegiance to him.

Earlier, Kitana leads the assault on the Wu Shi monastery with visible hesitation, hinting that her loyalty to Shao Kahn is already cracking.

Liu Kang defeats Shang Tsung in the tournament's second half and chooses mercy over execution, a decision that redefines the fight's moral stakes. After watching friends die and realms burn, Liu Kang rejects the cycle of vengeance that fuels Shao Kahn and Shinnok, proving Earthrealm's strength comes from restraint, not brutality. The mercy also keeps Shang Tsung from becoming a martyr and denies Shao Kahn a convenient propaganda victory.

Liu Kang's earlier victories, especially his clean defeat of Jade, already showed a fighter who wins decisively without cruelty.

While everyone focuses on the tournament, Shinnok uses the Kamidogu fragment delivered through Scorpion and the Lin Kuei to break his prison and tap into the One Being's dormant power. With the full set of relics in play, he channels enough energy to revive the ancient entity and fuses with it, becoming an apocalyptic threat that even the Elder Gods must unite against. His plan only succeeds because Earthrealm's defenders were distracted by the Mortal Kombat contest.

Shinnok's manipulation of Scorpion early on is the first step in a chain that quietly builds toward the resurrection while the tournament steals the spotlight.

The Lin Kuei were never Shinnok's allies; they were simply the tools he hired to extract the Kamidogu fragment from Scorpion. Once the relic is in his grasp, their cybernetic enhancements and combat training become liabilities who might resist or blackmail him. By eliminating them in the Netherrealm, Shinnok removes witnesses, severs the contract, and ensures no faction can reclaim the relics before he fuses with the One Being.

The anonymous nature of the original contract hinted from the start that the Lin Kuei's employer had no intention of sharing power.

After the Elder Gods-led assault brings down Shinnok, the One Being's raw energy is left without a host and begins to destabilize reality. Liu Kang, fresh off defeating Shao Kahn and freed by Kitana's return, channels that energy through himself, willingly taking on a cosmic burden no one else can bear. By absorbing and redistributing the power, he reverses the damage Shinnok caused and restores every realm, including Edenia, to its proper order.

Liu Kang's choice to spare Shang Tsung foreshadows the discipline he would need to wield the One Being's power without being corrupted by it.

Raiden died in his duel with Shao Kahn because he had surrendered his immortality to make the tournament legitimate, so the Elder Gods owed him a debt once the contest concluded. With Liu Kang restoring the realms and Shinnok defeated, there is no longer a reason to keep Raiden mortal, and the gods return his divine status. His revival completes the circle of divine intervention and restores the traditional balance between mortals and the thunder god.

Raiden's earlier declaration that he relinquished his immortality set the exact terms under which his death could later be undone.

Jax faces the massively powerful Shokan warrior Kintaro, whose strength and reach make a conventional fight nearly unwinnable. Using his cybernetically enhanced arms, Jax overpowers Kintaro in close combat and tears both arms from their sockets to remove Kintaro's primary weapons entirely. The brutal finish establishes how high the stakes have become and signals that Earthrealm's defenders are willing to meet Outworld's savagery with equal, if not greater, force.

Jax's earlier cybernetic upgrades were showcased precisely so his confrontation with Kintaro could deliver this kind of visceral payoff.

The Elder Gods sanctioned the Mortal Kombat tournament and accepted the risk of a realm-wide duel, but Shinnok's resurrection of the One Being threatens the existence of every realm, including their own. Once the contest is settled and Liu Kang defeats Shao Kahn, the Elder Gods are freed from the tournament's neutrality clause and can act directly. Their intervention is what finally brings down Shinnok after his fusion with the One Being pushes the threat beyond what any single warrior can handle.

The Elder Gods' early approval of the tournament established their authority over realm-level conflicts, setting up their later right to overturn Shinnok's victory.
