Mixing Nia

Nia, played by Karyn Parsons, is an ambitious biracial woman working at an advertising firm in New York City. Her life takes a turn when she and her colleague, Matt, portrayed by Eric Thal, are assigned to market a malt-liquor brand targeted at African-American teenagers. Frustrated by this project that conflicts with her personal values, Nia chooses to quit her job and instead dedicates herself to writing a novel inspired by her own heritage. Her goal is to explore her background by imagining a story of her Jewish father and African-American mother, who met and lived together in Greenwich Village during the 1960s.

Throughout her creative process, Nia embarks on a journey of self-discovery, attempting to understand and reconcile the different sides of her identity. Though her circle of friends is culturally diverse, she has mainly connected with her Jewish roots and identifies as a yuppie. However, she yearns to embrace her African-American identity more authentically. To gain deeper insight, she enrolls in an African-American writing workshop, where she meets and develops a romantic interest in the instructor, Lewis. Meanwhile, her past connection with Matt resurfaces when they reconnect over drinks, revealing that Matt has harbored feelings for her for some time. Nia finds herself navigating both relationships, each offering her a different perspective on who she is.

As Nia explores her cultural identity, she grapples with the complexities and clashes that come with trying to be true to both sides. Lewis criticizes her at times for being too white, suggesting he might find a “real black woman,” which leaves Nia questioning her authenticity. Conversely, with Matt, she sometimes feels out of place among his friends, encountering racial remarks and attitudes that make her feel isolated. These experiences highlight the internal conflict she faces: she cannot fully align with one side or the other without losing her sense of self.

The tension reaches a climax during a wedding celebration, where Nia, serving as a bridesmaid, invites both Lewis and Matt. She finds herself at a crossroads, torn between her relationships with both men, and ultimately chooses to be alone, realizing she needs to focus on her personal growth. Searching for clarity, she turns to her neighbor Joe, played by Diego Serrano, a talented musician with whom she has shared a flirtatious yet undefined connection throughout the film. She hopes he can help her find a sense of self outside the influences of race and culture. When she reaches his apartment, she discovers he has subleased it for six months, leaving behind a gift—a guitar—that sparks her renewed determination to finish her novel.

The movie concludes with Nia standing before an audience of people she once felt excluded from because of her race. She reads a heartfelt poem, symbolizing her acceptance of all parts of her identity. As she finds her voice, Joe is shown in the crowd, clapping and supporting her. Her journey is about embracing her true self: a multifaceted individual who is not defined solely by race, but by her courage, creativity, and the ongoing process of self-understanding.
