Middle Class Madhavan

Madhavan, a young lawyer, works under a principled but struggling senior advocate. He shoulders the responsibility of his family, including his irresponsible father Perumal, sharp-tongued mother Pushpa, and two unmarried sisters Maala and Neela. An orphan named Abhirami, who is under Madhavan’s senior’s guardianship, works as an announcer at Chennai’s SETC bus station and enters their lives with a quiet resilience.

Manimaran, who claims royal lineage, seeks Madhavan’s legal help and ends up falling for Neela. To secure a future for his sisters, Madhavan arranges Maala’s marriage to Kuzhandaivelu, an auto driver with a secret drinking problem. The engagement unfolds at a theme park outside the city, a setting that brings Abhirami into closer contact with Madhavan. Drawn by the visible happiness of a cohesive family, she and Madhavan cross paths in a moment that hints at something deeper.

During the wedding preparations, a mishap wipes out ₹125,000 worth of jewels—money Perumal had drawn from his retirement fund. Madhavan is left devastated, fearing how his family will react. Abhirami offers to help, but her guardian informs her that she can access her inheritance only if she marries. In a surprising move, he arranges the couple’s wedding, catching Madhavan’s family off guard as they are already stressed about the sisters’ nuptials. The newlyweds move in together, and Abhirami selflessly postpones any intimate plans, choosing to prioritize the family’s needs over their own.

Abhirami secretly uses her money to support the household, letting them believe it comes from Madhavan’s earnings. Pushpa gossips negatively about Abhirami, further straining the new couple. Despite the friction, Abhirami’s help enables the sisters’ marriages to proceed more smoothly. Kuzhandaivelu’s drinking problem surfaces as the engagement progresses, and he moves into Madhavan’s home, along with Neela and Manimaran, who also stay in the house and occupy the bedrooms. Madhavan and Abhirami end up sleeping in the living area, putting their private plans on hold.

In a bid to reclaim a semblance of privacy, Madhavan plans to bond with Abhirami away from the crowded house, but when Perumal leaves for a religious trip to Sabarimala, the plan backfires and they are electrocuted in the bathroom. Abhirami is later transferred to Tindivanam, and Madhavan accompanies her, hoping for some quiet time together. Their attempts at a private moment are thwarted repeatedly—the train ride and a bomb hoax at a lodge interrupt their plans, forcing Madhavan to return to Chennai while Abhirami remains in Tindivanam.

Back home, Kuzhandaivelu and Manimaran’s antics land them in trouble, and they end up in custody after a volatile incident. Madhavan bailed them out and they recover at his house, reclaiming the bedrooms as if nothing had changed. The couple’s weekends together become sporadic, their hopes of closeness clashing with logistics and crowded spaces. The tension intensifies when Neela becomes pregnant, prompting hurtful comments from Pushpa and leaving Abhirami feeling unwanted and infertile. She eventually leaves for Tindivanam, feeling like an orphan again and doubting whether anyone in the family truly cares for her.

In court, Madhavan argues that intimacy is not the sole purpose of marriage, prompting his senior to confront the family about their insensitivity and misplaced priorities. The confrontation opens the family’s eyes, and they apologize to Abhirami and Madhavan. Perumal and Pushpa invite Abhirami to stay with them, and she accepts, seeking peace and acceptance. As a bus carrying Abhirami nears Chennai, a crisis unfolds when the bus is involved in an accident; though her handbag is recovered, the family fears the worst. Abhirami is eventually rescued, and the family apologizes once more for their earlier behavior.

The film closes on a hopeful note: Madhavan and Abhirami finally share a private moment in a van, while Kuzhandaivelu and Manimaran drive, and the rest of the family continues their journey above them, signaling a new sense of balance and togetherness after a year of trials and misunderstandings.
