The film serves as the series finale of the long‑running TV comedy‑drama M*A*S*H, set around an army surgical unit in the Korean War. After years of camaraderie, the 4077th is ordered to shut down. Captain “Hawkeye” Pierce (Alan Alda) returns from a nervous breakdown, while fellow surgeons—easygoing Capt. B.J. Hunnicutt (Mike Farrell) and the fastidious Maj. Charles Winchester (David Ogden Stiers)—each grapple with the imminent closure and the bittersweet end of their friendship.
