In 1944 Capt. Josiah J. Newman heads Ward 7, the neuro‑psychiatric unit of an Arizona Army Air Corps hospital. With limited resources and a six‑week deadline, he and his inventive staff—including Cpl. Jake Leibowitz—scramble to treat men whose minds have been scarred by war. Among them are Colonel Norville Bliss, who has dissociated from his past; Capt. Paul Winston, left nearly catatonic after months concealed behind enemy lines; and Cpl. Jim Tompkins, traumatized by a downed aircraft. Their recovery determines whether they’ll return to combat.
