Lin Zhi-Ming grows up as an orphan in the Qing dynasty, raised as a monk within the Northern Shaolin temple. A silver ankle bracelet is the sole reminder of his past life, and he wears it with quiet secrecy. Though he is a devoted Shaolin student, he often skirts the monastery’s rules—smuggling meat onto temple grounds and secretly teaching outsiders the school’s secrets. He forms informal bonds with local youths, taking them on as disciples; two of them are chosen to perform the Lion dance at the birthday celebration of magistrate He Suo, the man responsible for his family’s death. To avenge them, he persuades the youths to let him take the dance slot himself.

Across the border in Southern China, Si-ma Yan, niece of the Southern Shaolin master Fa Ren, learns of the capital’s birthday celebrations and vows to avenge her family by assassinating He Suo. Fa Ren quickly discovers Si-ma Yan’s disappearance and recruits the devoted disciple Chao Wei to aid her mission.

During the festivities, Zhi-Ming tries to perform the Lion dance while secretly plotting to stab He Suo, but Si-ma Yan and her allies strike first with hidden bows. He Suo dodges the arrows, and a fierce confrontation ensues. Chao Wei and a wounded Si-ma Yan reluctantly join Zhi-Ming to escape He Suo’s henchmen. He Suo blocks all roads to the south, forcing the trio to slip away toward Southern Shaolin. They bypass checkpoints and spend a night resting; Si-ma Yan reveals to Zhi-Ming the silver ankle band and explains its meaning—if given to a girl, it would bind them as sisters; if given to a boy, he would be set for marriage to her. Zhi-Ming keeps his own band secret for now.

Back at the temple, Master Shi Ren(/actor/yu-hai) confronts Zhi-Ming for desertion and sentences him to years of punishment in confinement, along with another monk. After learning of Si-ma Yan, the abbot hints that Zhi-Ming could abandon the temple and live a secular life, but he cannot fully leave Shaolin behind. He is allowed to escape with the understanding that he will return to face punishment, a condition he accepts to pursue the woman he has grown to protect.

When Zhi-Ming reaches Southern Shaolin, he tells Chao Wei that he shares the same ankle band as Si-ma Yan. Yet Si-ma Yan has already left the temple with her uncle to shield Southern Shaolin from He Suo’s reach. After another escape from Master Shi Ren, the trio reach the main road and learn that Fa Ren is mortally wounded and Si-ma Yan has been captured by He Suo and taken away by boat. He Suo plans to lure Zhi-Ming and Chao Wei into a deadly trap.

The pursuit leads them to the river, where they discover He Suo’s boat. They block the waterway as He Suo’s henchmen close in, and reinforcements from Northern and Southern Shaolin arrive to aid in Si-ma Yan’s rescue. After eliminating the henchmen, He Suo is overpowered by Zhi-Ming and his companions, and Si-ma Yan delivers the final blow that ends He Suo’s threat.

With the mission accomplished, Zhi-Ming hands the ankle band to Chao Wei—who, after initial reluctance, accepts it in front of Si-ma Yan. He bids farewell to his Shaolin brothers and departs with the monks back to Northern Shaolin, closing this chapter of his journey while leaving the door open to future adventures.
