Manthrika Kuthira (1996) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Manthrika Kuthira (1996), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

The film opens with a bold, high-stakes arrest led by Circle Inspector Venugopal [Lalu Alex], who captures Kondotty Jaffar, a feared figure wanted for murder and the rape of four women. Public prosecutor Sunny Kuruvilla [Dileep] takes up the case and wins a conviction that sends Jaffar to prison for forty years. But the victory is brittle: Jaffar issues a chilling threat, vowing to murder Sunny and Sunny’s family from his cell.

Sunny Kuruvilla lives a bright, globetrotting kind of life as a popular novelist who attracts a sizeable female following, and this fame fuels tension at home with his wife, Ancy [Mohini], who worries about the attention he draws from others. The couple shares a warm, romantic bond, yet their happiness is tested by the complexities of public adoration and private desire. They are not alone in their world; Ancy’s sister Sonia [Vani Viswanath] often visits, and Sunny’s younger brother, Jose Kuruvilla, an aspiring director who brands himself as Prem Gandhi, also appears in the orbit of this family, along with their loving parents. The family often travels together, and one such trip takes them to Ootty to visit Sonia at her boarding school, a trip that will prove to be more fateful than they realize. Also part of the mix is Sunny’s father, a figure whose presence adds a layer of legitimacy and legacy to Sunny’s life, and who is deeply woven into the family’s dynamics.

Unknown to them, Jaffar makes a daring escape from prison, triggering a countdown of danger that Velocites through the days ahead. Venugopal tries to reach Sunny with warnings, but the timing is off and the messages arrive too late. In Ootty, a car collision with a truck injures Ancy, a blow that not only disrupts her health but also complicates the couple’s romantic life, as Ancy must endure three months of bed rest, during which the possibility of intimacy fades and tensions rise.

Back at home, Venugopal solidifies a security plan, assigning two constables to watch over Sunny and his family. The enforced physical distance strains Sunny and Ancy’s relationship, and Ancy grows increasingly suspicious of Sunny’s interactions with Sonia. At Ancy’s insistence, Sonia returns to her hostel, while Jose accompanies her to Trivandrum, pulling the family apart even as they try to stay connected.

The peace is shattered when Jose returns and a gunshot rings out in the night. Ancy is discovered dead in her bedroom alongside a revolver, though the postmortem later reveals she had overdosed on sleeping pills. Venugopal identifies a crucial clue—a footprint leading up to Ancy’s room that ties Jaffar to the scene. A few days later, Sonia receives a suicide note in the mail from Ancy, asking Sonia to look after Ancy’s daughter in Sunny’s life after her death. The emotional aftershocks hit hard, and Sunny sinks into alcoholism, his life spiraling as his parents and friends rally around.

In a bid to stabilize the family situation, a marriage is arranged between Sunny and Sonia, a step that initially fills both with hesitation but eventually moves forward. On their first night as a married couple, Sonia is startled to see Jaffar staring through the bedroom window; the intruder flees when Sunny wakes. Sonia then discovers Sunny’s manuscript, an unpublished novel that Sunny had asked the publisher not to release. She notices that a portion of the manuscript contains the exact suicide note that she had received from Ancy. A cross-check with a publisher’s copy reveals that the suicide-notes section is missing, deepening Sonia’s unease. She also uncovers Ancy’s diary, which describes Sunny’s infatuation with Sonia and hints at abusive patterns when confronted. Sonia confides in Venugopal, growing the web of tension and suspicion.

The truth erupts in a confrontational moment: Jaffar reveals that he witnessed Sunny murder Ancy with a revolver after administering milk laced with sleeping pills. In the ensuing struggle, Sunny kills Jaffar—and, in a separate clash, Venugopal. He then turns his attention to Sonia and her father, launching another violent attack before finally surrendering. The story closes on a somber note, with Sunny confined to a mental asylum while Sonia and their daughter visit him, a family shattered by deceit, fear, and the consequences of a life built on secrets and manipulation.
