Mikhail Glinka debuts a new work at Earl Vielgorsky’s soirée, but an audience used to Western music reacts coldly, disheartening him. He studies in Italy, returns to craft an opera; Zhukovsky suggests Ivan Susanin, and Tsar renames it *A Life for the Tsar* and hires Baron Rosen. The opera succeeds, yet Glinka doubts the libretto; Nicholas’s suspicion of *Ruslan and Lyudmila* fuels his resolve.
