Anton Ivanovich Voronov, a professor at the Conservatoire, reveres Bach as the musical yardstick. When his gifted daughter Serafima joins Aleksei Mukhin’s operetta, he erupts in anger, seeing it as a betrayal of true opera. Yet the demanding role and a dream in which Bach tells him ‘people need all kinds of music’ make him accept the operetta’s worth.
