The film ends with Paul Chartier’s world collapsing around him. After months of chasing the scrap‑dealer Marcel, he finally uncovers the secret second basement beneath Marcel’s garage – a grotesque pit where the killer keeps man‑eating pigs that chew on dismembered human flesh. Paul barely escapes, dropping the carcasses in front of the police station and leaving a note that points the blame at Jacky, the wealthy informant who has been shielded by the force.

Desperate for proof, Paul breaks into the home of Marcel’s associate Mathilde and finds an old‑fashioned videotape hidden inside a broken TV. The reel shows the two missing girls being forced into a van, where an older man rapes them before they are dragged away – the same horror that sparked the whole investigation. As Paul watches, armed assassins burst into his house, setting it ablaze. He narrowly flees, takes refuge with his estranged mother, and learns that Marcel has already slipped from police custody, a clear sign that the system is protecting him.

With his badge stripped and his marriage shattered – Paul even abandons his pregnant wife Gina at the hospital to pursue the case – he decides to finish the job himself. Through old contacts in a brothel run by Madame Hélène, he discovers that Leon, the liar who first tipped him off, has forged a passport for Marcel. Paul confronts Leon, kills him, and follows the trail to a secluded woods where Marcel hides. After a tense chase and a brutal hand‑to‑hand fight, Paul finally overpowers Marcel and shoots him dead.

The nation’s demand for justice is met, but Paul is arrested as a vigilante. In the closing moments, his former superior Hinkel offers him a way out if he can identify the uniformed man shown in the video – a hint that the real perpetrator sits high in the government. Paul realizes that exposing that figure would only fuel Hinkel’s promotion, so he accepts his fate, choosing a prison cell over a corrupt bargain. The film ends with Paul resigned to his new life behind bars, having taken the law into his own hands while the institutional rot remains untouched.
