What Happens in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha: Reflection: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha: Reflection (2017) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

The story centers around Nanoha Takamachi, played by Yukari Tamura, a young nine-year-old Japanese girl who leads a quiet, ordinary life attending elementary school alongside her parents and older siblings. However, her mundane routine is completely transformed when she discovers and rescues an injured ferret. To her surprise, the animal reveals itself to be a young shapeshifting mage named Yūno Scrya, voiced by Kaori Mizuhashi.

Yūno is an archaeologist hailing from a parallel dimension known as Midchilda. He has traveled to Earth on a critical mission: to recover a collection of 21 ancient and perilous artifacts known as the "Jewel Seeds." These artifacts possess the dangerous ability to grant unnatural powers to any living being that comes into contact with them, though this power often results in the creature mutating into a mindless monster. Because Yūno was injured during his attempts to secure these seeds, he is forced to remain in his ferret form to recover, relying heavily on the kindness of Nanoha. During this time, he provides her with an intelligent device—a magical wand named Raising Heart. To Yūno's amazement, Nanoha displays an incredible and unexpected aptitude for the arcane arts. While maintaining her facade of a normal schoolgirl, she begins training in magic under Yūno's guidance as they work together to track down the scattered seeds.

The plot intensifies when Nanoha attempts to retrieve her sixth Jewel Seed and crosses paths with another magical girl, Fate Testarossa, voiced by Nana Mizuki, and her loyal familiar, Arf, voiced by Natsuko Kuwatani. It is revealed that Fate's life is defined by tragedy; over a year prior, her mother, Precia Testarossa, suffered a mental breakdown following the death of her daughter, Alicia. This led to the creation of "Project Fate," an illegal and unethical research operation focused on cloning and resurrection. As a result, Precia became a fugitive, hunted by the Time-Space Administration Bureau (TSAB), the inter-dimensional police force.

Fate is a clone of Alicia, implanted with the original girl's memories. Despite being burdened with these happy childhood memories, Fate suffers constant abuse from Precia, who is unable to love the clone as she loved the original daughter. Driven by a desperate loyalty to her mother, Fate is coerced into collecting the Jewel Seeds to power a gateway to Al Hazard, a mythical realm where Precia believes Alicia can be truly resurrected.

As the story progresses, Nanoha and Fate engage in repeated, high-stakes magical confrontations over the discovery of each new Jewel Seed. The scale of their battles eventually draws the attention of the TSAB, who intervene to prevent further collateral damage to the environment. Eventually, Nanoha manages to defeat Fate in combat and delivers her into the custody of the TSAB. Upon realizing that Fate has been captured, Precia heartlessly abandons her daughter, attempting to use the seeds already in her possession to perform a dimensional jump to Al Hazard.

Finding herself betrayed and alone, Fate finds the strength to resolve her inner conflict and decides to ally herself with the TSAB and Nanoha to stop Precia's madness. Although they work tirelessly to minimize the destructive side-effects of the magic being used, they are unable to stop Precia from completing her spell. As the climax concludes, Precia's final location remains a mystery. In the aftermath of the conflict, Nanoha and Fate forge a deep and lasting friendship, though Fate must first travel to Midchilda to face the TSAB and prove that she was merely an unwilling pawn in her mother's criminal schemes.

Plot questions answered

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha: Reflection Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha: Reflection (2017): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

What are the Jewel Seeds and why are they dangerous?

The Jewel Seeds are 21 ancient artifacts Yūno Scrya first discovered in the parallel universe of Midchilda. They grant any living being unnatural powers and frequently transform them into monsters, which is why Yūno travels to Earth to collect and seal them away. Their immense energy also makes them the target of anyone seeking raw magical fuel, including Precia Testarossa.

Foreshadowing: Yūno's warning that the Seeds "turn living beings into monsters" is later reflected in the wreckage of towns Nanoha and Fate battle through.

  • jewel seeds
  • yuuno scrya
  • ancient artifacts
  • midchilda
  • monsters
Q2

Why does Fate Testarossa stay loyal to Precia despite being abused?

Fate remains loyal because Precia cloned her from Alicia Testarossa and implanted Alicia's happy childhood memories into her, so Fate experiences those joyful moments as her own. That psychological anchor, combined with her desperate wish to be loved by her mother, keeps her obedient even as Precia abuses her. The implanted memories make her believe she is protecting a bond that only ever existed for a different daughter.

Foreshadowing: Even in early episodes, Fate hesitates when discussing her mother's affection, hinting that her sense of family is built on something unstable.

  • fate testarossa
  • precia
  • alicia memories
  • cloning
  • child abuse
  • loyalty
Q3

What is Project Fate and why did Precia create it?

Project Fate is the illegal cloning and resurrection program Precia Testarossa launched after her daughter Alicia died, an event that drove her insane. She cloned Alicia to create Fate, implanting her with Alicia's memories in a desperate attempt to resurrect her child. The program made Precia a fugitive from the Time-Space Administration Bureau and set the entire Jewel Seed plot into motion.

Foreshadowing: Precia's obsession is foreshadowed by the emotional gap she shows toward Fate even when she appears caring.

  • project fate
  • precia testarossa
  • alicia
  • cloning
  • resurrection
  • tsab
Q4

Why does Precia want to reach Al Hazard so badly?

Precia wants to reach Al Hazard because the mythical world holds the only power she believes can truly resurrect her dead daughter Alicia. The Jewel Seeds Fate collects are intended to fuel the dimensional jump to Al Hazard, where Precia hopes to complete what Project Fate could not. It is less a journey of ambition than the final, deranged step of a grieving mother's plan.

Foreshadowing: Precia's references to Al Hazard long before the spell attempt hint that she is building toward one irreversible ritual.

  • al hazard
  • precia
  • resurrection
  • jewel seeds
  • dimensional jump
Q5

How does Nanoha learn magic and become so powerful so quickly?

Nanoha's growth begins when she rescues Yūno Scrya in ferret form and receives the intelligent device Raising Heart from him. Her remarkably strong natural aptitude for magic surprises Yūno, so he trains her directly while she continues her regular school life. Repeated real combat against Fate Testarossa over the Jewel Seeds then forces her to mature as a combat mage far faster than any classroom lessons could.

Foreshadowing: Yūno's decision to entrust Raising Heart to a nine-year-old signals from the start that her magical aptitude is unusual.

  • yuuno
  • magical aptitude
  • training
Q6

Why does Fate decide to help Nanoha against her own mother?

Fate switches sides because Precia abandons her the moment Nanoha delivers her to the TSAB, proving that her service was never the point of the mission. That betrayal shatters the illusion maintained by Alicia's implanted memories and forces Fate to see that she was always just a tool for collecting Jewel Seeds. Choosing to help Nanoha and the TSAB stop Precia is the first decision she makes as herself rather than as a clone.

Foreshadowing: Each time Precia pulls Fate back into danger without concern for her injuries plants the seed for this turn.

  • fate betrayal
  • nanoha
  • precia
  • jewel seeds
  • tsab
  • character arc
Q7

Why does Precia abandon Fate after she is captured?

Precia abandons Fate because Fate was only ever a means of collecting Jewel Seeds to power her dimensional jump to Al Hazard. Once Nanoha defeats Fate and brings her to the TSAB, Precia loses patience and decides to attempt the jump herself with the few Seeds already gathered. For Precia, rescuing her daughter was never the goal, so saving her has no value.

Foreshadowing: Precia's cold reaction to Fate's injuries earlier in the series already shows that her love is conditional on usefulness.

  • precia
  • fate capture
  • abandonment
  • jewel seeds
  • al hazard
Q8

Why can't Nanoha and the TSAB stop Precia from finishing her spell?

Nanoha, Fate, and the TSAB successfully limit the destructive side effects of the Jewel Seeds, but they cannot physically reach Precia before she finishes casting. By the time they break through the area she has warded, the dimensional jump is already complete. Precia vanishes into an unknown fate, leaving her followers and enemies unable to undo what she has done.

Foreshadowing: Precia's earlier insistence on gathering Seeds "before anyone realizes" hints that her plan depends on speed rather than strength.

  • precia spell
  • dimensional jump
  • nanoha
  • fate
  • tsab
  • al hazard
Q9

Why does the TSAB get involved in the Jewel Seed conflict?

The Time-Space Administration Bureau is an inter-dimensional police force that steps in because the magical battles between Nanoha and Fate are causing heavy collateral damage on Earth. As peacekeepers, the TSAB has both the authority and the responsibility to contain threats that endanger civilians in unguarded worlds. Their involvement also turns the personal feud into an official operation, which is what eventually forces Fate to face Precia's crimes directly.

Foreshadowing: Even during the first Jewel Seed fights, the news reports of damaged city blocks hint that bigger authorities will eventually intervene.

  • tsab
  • time-space administration bureau
  • collateral damage
  • nanoha
  • fate
Q10

Why does Fate have to return to Midchilda after defeating Precia?

Fate must return to Midchilda because she was the operative Precia used to gather Jewel Seeds, which makes her legally entangled in Project Fate and her mother's crimes. Even though she switched sides and fought to stop Precia, the TSAB still needs her to formally prove she was an unwilling accessory rather than a willing collaborator. Only by clearing her name there can she freely build her new life and friendship with Nanoha.

Foreshadowing: Fate's conflicted reaction to the TSAB earlier in the story foreshadows that her legal status will have to be resolved.

  • fate trial
  • midchilda
  • tsab
  • project fate
  • crimes
Q11

What happened to Precia after she completed the spell?

Precia's final whereabouts are left unknown after her dimensional jump to Al Hazard is completed using the Jewel Seeds. The story never confirms whether she actually reached the mythical world, was destroyed in the attempt, or is trapped somewhere between dimensions. Her disappearance remains an unresolved thread, preserving the threat she represents even after her arc ends.

Foreshadowing: The unsettling calm of her final spell foreshadows that Precia is willing to vanish rather than face defeat.

  • precia fate
  • al hazard
  • dimensional jump
  • disappearance
Q12

Why does Nanoha keep fighting Fate instead of teaming up with her at first?

Nanoha and Fate are drawn into conflict because both are hunting the same Jewel Seeds, yet each thinks the other is the threat. Nanoha is working with Yūno to seal the Seeds away, while Fate is obeying Precia's orders to gather them for the jump to Al Hazard. Without knowing each other's motives, their missions collide until Nanoha defeats Fate and brings her to the TSAB, where the truth finally surfaces.

Foreshadowing: Each battle ends with neither side willing to leave the Seeds behind, foreshadowing that their rivalry is fueled by incompatible goals, not personal hatred.
