The whole story of Lucky Man (2023) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Murugan, a struggling real estate agent, lives with his wife Deivanai and their son. Financial troubles weigh heavily on him, but a stroke of luck seems to shift his fortunes when he wins a car, something he begins to treat as a lucky charm that could turn his life around.

Shivakumar, a short-tempered police officer, crosses paths with Murugan over a parking dispute that flares up near a neighbor’s house. The confrontation grows tense until a politician steps in and compels the officer to apologize, signaling the first crack in Murugan’s precarious luck.

A few days later, as Murugan gears up to meet an important client, he parks near his landlord’s house and wakes up to the shocking news that the car has vanished the next day. With the help of his friend Venkat, he files a police complaint. The case lands in the hands of the officer, who promises to investigate. Yet Venkat hints that the mystery might be less about theft and more about a personal grudge held by the officer.

Encouraged by Venkat’s suspicion, Murugan escalates his efforts by filing a complaint against the officer with higher authorities. In retaliation, the officer frames Murugan in a drug-peddling case, turning Murugan’s life upside down. Concurrently, a group of thugs deceives Murugan into paying two lakh rupees for a wrecked car, fraudulently claiming it is his stolen vehicle.

Driven by a desperate need to reclaim what he’s lost, Murugan’s focus on work collapses and he is eventually fired. The mounting pressure becomes too much for his wife, who leaves him, leaving Murugan to face the fallout alone. In a stark act of despair, Murugan even kidnaps the officer’s pet dog, hoping to force the officer to feel the pain of losing something precious.

Time passes, and Murugan begins to see the truth: the officer is an honest man. He returns the dog and confesses his reckless actions. Touched by Murugan’s contrition, the officer steps in to help recover the car and clears Murugan’s name, restoring a glimmer of trust in the system.

In the end, Murugan is reunited with his family, reclaiming both his dignity and happiness. The ordeal leaves him wiser, with a renewed sense of hope for a steadier future and the possibility of rebuilding what was nearly lost.

Lucky Man Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Lucky Man (2023): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Shivakumar frame Murugan in a drug peddling case?

Shivakumar framed Murugan in retaliation for escalating complaints against him. After Murugan filed a complaint with higher authorities accusing Shivakumar of stealing his car out of personal grudge, the officer used his position to plant drugs in Murugan's vehicle and register a false case against him.

Foreshadowing: The parking dispute early in the film established the tense relationship between the two men, with the politician forcing Shivakumar to apologize, foreshadowing his resentment toward Murugan.

  • drug case
  • retaliation
  • police complaint
Q2

Who stole Murugan's car from outside the landlord's house?

The actual thief is never identified in the story. While Venkat suspects Shivakumar of stealing the car as revenge for the parking dispute, this proves to be a misjudgment. The car was genuinely stolen by an unknown person, though it is eventually recovered with Shivakumar's help.

Foreshadowing: The car goes missing right after Murugan's confrontation with Shivakumar over parking, which initially leads Murugan and Venkat to suspect the officer.

Q3

Why did Murugan's wife Deivanai leave him?

Deivanai left Murugan because the mounting troubles became unbearable. After being framed in the drug case, Murugan lost his job, and the family faced extreme financial stress. The cumulative pressure of poverty, criminal accusations, and Murugan's obsessive focus on recovering the car rather than his family drove her to leave.

Foreshadowing: Murugan's neglect of his real estate work after the car theft previewed his inability to maintain stability during crisis.

  • family
  • financial stress

Q4

Why did Murugan kidnap Shivakumar's pet dog?

Murugan kidnapped the dog in a desperate act to make Shivakumar feel the same pain of losing something precious. After being framed, losing his job, and having his wife leave him, Murugan wanted the officer to experience the emotional suffering he was going through. It was a low point in his judgment driven by desperation and frustration.

Foreshadowing: The kidnapping occurs at Murugan's lowest emotional point, after multiple losses have accumulated.

  • kidnap
  • dog
  • revenge
  • desperation

Q5

Why did Murugan pay two lakh rupees for a wrecked car?

Murugan was deceived by a gang of thugs who claimed the wrecked car was his stolen vehicle. Desperate to recover something after losing his car and facing legal trouble, Murugan paid the two lakh rupees in hopes of getting his property back. The thugs exploited his vulnerability and optimism.

Foreshadowing: This scam targets Murugan's weakest moment, his desperate need to reclaim what he lost.

Q6

How did Murugan realize Shivakumar was actually an honest officer?

Over time, through observing Shivakumar's conduct during the investigation and seeing how he handled cases, Murugan came to recognize that the officer genuinely cared about truth and justice. This shift in perspective allowed Murugan to trust Shivakumar's integrity and eventually confess to kidnapping the dog.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes showing Shivakumar's commitment to his duties hinted at his honest nature despite his short temper.

Q7

Why did Murugan lose his job at the real estate company?

Murugan was fired because he neglected his work while obsessively focused on recovering his stolen car and fighting the false drug case. His performance suffered significantly in the weeks following the car's disappearance, leading his employer to terminate his employment.

Foreshadowing: The timeline shows Murugan's attention shifting away from work immediately after the car theft.

Q8

How was Murugan's car finally recovered?

After Murugan returned Shivakumar's dog and confessed to kidnapping it, Shivakumar was touched by Murugan's honesty and remorse. The officer then personally took steps to investigate and recover the missing car, eventually locating it and clearing Murugan's name from the false drug charges.

Foreshadowing: The mutual understanding between the two men after the dog return created the opportunity for Shivakumar to help.

Q9

Why did a politician intervene in the parking dispute between Murugan and Shivakumar?

This intervention established the power dynamic that influenced later events.

Q10

Why did Murugan treat the lottery car as his lucky charm?
