Love and Pain and the Whole Damn Thing

Walter Elbertson [Timothy Bottoms] is a young, shy asthmatic who lacks direction and confidence about his future. His father hopes a biking holiday in Spain will spark some spirit in him, but the journey soon reveals Walter’s struggle with his asthma. The exertion of the ride becomes torturous, and he falls behind the rest of the group as the miles roll by under a bright Spanish sun.

Lila Fisher [Maggie Smith] travels through Spain by bus, carrying her own quiet unease. She’s socially wary, tends to keep to herself, and even a lighthearted Spaniard’s bird-noise chorus unsettles her. Her bus route and Walter’s bike trip begin to intersect in a way neither expects, setting the stage for an unlikely connection to form.

As the two tours converge, Walter decides he’s had enough of the bike’s demands and slips onto the departing bus. He ends up seated behind Lila, wheezing after sprinting to catch the vehicle, the moment both of them acknowledge their mutual awkwardness and the shared strain of travel. This encounter stirs jealousy in Walter, prompting him to tap into a new reserve of resolve as he fights to keep her by his side and away from anyone who might threaten their fragile happiness.

Amidst the evolving road trip and the dawning realization of life’s fragility, Lila reveals a painful truth: she has not long to live.
