While navigating through abandoned neighborhoods, Joel faces a giant toad-like creature. He is rescued by a stray dog that he names Boy, who becomes his companion and guide during the journey.

Falling into a den of monstrous worms known as Sand-Gobblers, Joel is rescued by seasoned survivor Clyde Dutton and brave Minnow. They share their plans for moving north, where conditions are hostile for monsters.

As Joel and Boy continue their journey, the dog is ensnared by a colossal centipede. Overcoming his fear, Joel uses his crossbow to rescue Boy, showcasing his growing bravery in the face of danger.

In a rundown motel, they encounter Mav1s, a dying robot that briefly restores Joel's radio. With hopes rising, Joel tries to contact Aimee, only to discover that her safety is under threat from outside forces.

The next day, a queen Sand-Gobbler attacks during a hideout attempt, leading to a tense confrontation. Joel courageously uses a grenade to eliminate the threat, but his reprimand causes Boy to run away.

After a series of adventures, Joel wakes up to find Aimee caring for a beach colony of elderly survivors. The reunion is bittersweet as Aimee expresses her changes over the years, leaving Joel conflicted.

Understanding Aimee's growth and needs, Joel resolves to return to his own colony. He sends a warning about dangers but learns of new threats brewing at Aimee's home.
