Lolita’s Club

Raúl Fuentes, a brooding police officer with a volatile temper and a drinking problem, is placed on unpaid leave after a brutal incident with Moncho Tristán, the son of a local drug trafficker. A snitch from the drug mafia, Mazuera, approaches him with a deal: he can provide documents that prove the Tristán family’s involvement in drug trafficking and prostitution, but Raúl must agree to reveal the full story only after Mazuera has left the country. Raúl puts the matter on hold and travels from Pontevedra to Alicante, where his family lives, hoping to keep a lid on the violence that has defined his life.

The return home is jarring. The visit, the first in two years, catches his family off guard, and his father, José, is clearly not pleased to see him. Their relationship has grown tense since Olga, José’s younger wife, was once Raúl’s girlfriend. Raúl keeps most people at arm’s length, with the notable exception of his twin brother, a figure whose warmth stands in stark contrast to Raúl’s hardened exterior. Valentín, who is mentally disabled, is portrayed as sweet, gentle, and universally liked. His world runs on smaller, simpler certainties, including his affection for one of the club’s prostitutes. When Raúl discovers Valentín working at a nightclub and in love with a girl from the establishment, he reacts with anger and storms off in search of Valentín at Lolita’s Club, a shadowy nightclub and bordello.

Inside Lolita’s Club, Raúl confronts Milena, the young Colombian prostitute who has become Valentín’s favourite. Milena is depicted as the oldest and most charismatic of the club’s young women, despite her youth. She has left behind her daughter and sends money to her mother to secure a better future, a stark reminder of the costs of the nocturnal life she shares with the other girls. Milena is both tough and compassionate, and she genuinely cares for Valentín, who works at the club running errands for the other girls. A planned reversal—having sex with Milena so Valentín would catch them in the act—unfolds with devastating consequences. Valentín bursts into Raúl’s car in a moment of misguided bravado, imagining he is driving away, even though he cannot drive. Two hit men sent by the mafia maturely misread the scene and shoot Valentín, killing him in a moment that shatters Raúl and his family. The loss is a turning point: Raúl returns from the funeral a broken man, with even Olga showing him little compassion or understanding.

In the aftermath, Raúl’s world feels hollow. He engages in a cold, passionless moment with Maria, a coworker who brings news of Mazuera’s own murder at the hands of mafia forces. Raúl confronts Tristán not for revenge but to compel Milena toward freedom—his appeal is for her to receive a passport and an escape from the net of prostitution. Back at Lolita’s Club, he offers Milena her passport and the possibility of a new life, professing his love. Milena rejects him, choosing to keep her documents and continue earning money, a decision that underscores the harshness of the life she leads. Raúl reminds Milena of Valentín’s tragic end—the very person she had cared for—and the memory of Valentín’s gentler nature lingers as a haunting contrast to the violence that surrounds them.

The final act of the story circles back to the idea of identity and influence. In a haunting turn, Raúl enters Milena’s room just as Valentín once did, attempting to seize Valentín’s persona and embody his brother’s gentleness within himself. The film closes on a note of ambiguity, leaving the audience to ponder whether Raúl can ever escape the gravitational pull of Valentín’s memory and the violent world that claimed him.
