John Huston’s final government‑commissioned trilogy film examines returning combat veterans whose wounds are largely psychological. It follows patients and staff treating conditions now called PTSD, then termed psychoneurosis or shell‑shock. Officials deemed the 1946 work counterproductive to post‑war aims, so it stayed unreleased until 1981.
