Jean Valjean is wrongfully imprisoned for nineteen years due to stealing bread. His unjust punishment leaves a deep impact on his character and outlook on life.

Valjean is finally released from prison thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Herberst, his devoted wife. He steps out into a world that harshly rejects him as a former convict.

After being rejected everywhere he seeks shelter, Valjean finds mercy at the home of Bishop Myriel. The Bishop provides him refuge and encourages him to start anew.

Overcome by temptation, Valjean attempts to steal silverware from the Bishop. However, when caught, the Bishop surprises everyone by claiming it was a gift, urging Valjean to change his life.

Nine years later, Valjean has transformed into a prosperous industrialist and is now the mayor. His journey of redemption appears successful as he leaves his past behind.

Fantine, a single mother, loses her job at Valjean's factory after her secret is revealed. In desperation to provide for her daughter, Cosette, she is pushed into a life of prostitution.

Inspector Javert, who monitored Valjean during his imprisonment, begins to suspect a connection between Valjean and the criminal he believed to be around. He is relentless in his pursuit.

After a violent incident where Fantine is attacked, Inspector Javert arrests her. Valjean uses his position as mayor to intervene and secure her release, showing his growing sense of responsibility.

Tragically, Fantine becomes gravely ill and begs Valjean to care for her daughter Cosette. In a heartbreaking moment, she dies before Valjean can act further, leaving him filled with anger and despair.

Valjean bravely navigates the chaos of the barricades to save Marius for Cosette's sake. He is faced with a moral choice as he contemplates revenge against Javert.

In a surprising act of mercy, Valjean chooses to spare Javert's life, demonstrating his journey towards redemption. Javert, unable to reconcile his beliefs with Valjean's act of kindness, ultimately takes his own life.

In the wake of Javert's death, Valjean walks the streets as a free man, finally at peace with his past. This moment encapsulates his journey from a convict to a man of mercy and resilience.
