In 1935 Toronto, Jane Stuart and her ill mother move into the home of Jane’s wealthy, snobbish grandmother, where Jane is verbally abused and her mother bullied. Sent to a private academy, Jane learns other girls say her presumed‑dead father is alive. When Andrew Stuart contacts them, Jane travels by train to Bright River, uncovers an old family mystery, makes new friends, and works to reunite her parents.
