On the pivotal day of September 24, 2021, Amy Carr, portrayed by Naomi Watts, is still grappling with her recent tragedy and decides to take a personal day off from work. As she watches her daughter, Emily, board the school bus, she also notices her teenage son, Noah, who feigns illness and remains in bed. While jogging through the local woods, Amy engages in routine calls, oblivious to the impending turmoil that awaits her. Her moment of calm is abruptly interrupted as the sound of sirens fills the air, soon followed by a harrowing alert on her phone - all schools in the area are now on lockdown.

In a state of panic, Amy scrambles to gather more information through frantic phone calls. As she starts piecing together the alarming details, it becomes increasingly clear that a shooter has emerged at the high school, tragically claiming the life of a young girl. To make matters worse, Noah is missing, although his truck has been located in the parking lot. A nearby mechanic reveals that Noah’s vehicle is among several being inspected, intensifying Amy’s concerns that her son may be entangled in the unfolding drama.

A police officer reaches out to Amy via the 911 dispatcher, voicing several inquiries about Noah that only amplify her confusion. Eventually, she learns that Noah is not the shooter, and in fact, the assailant is not a student at all. As the shocking truth surfaces, Amy finds herself racing towards the high school. In a daring move, she decides to call the shooter’s cell phone, a number her boss secretly obtained. The call is abruptly cut short when the shooter answers, leaving Amy with even more distressing uncertainties about the situation.

Upon arriving at the highway, Amy quickly hails a Lyft, eager to reach the high school amidst the pandemonium. Driven by sheer determination, she makes another attempt to call the shooter, hoping to stall him just long enough for law enforcement to act and resolve the hostage situation. Noah, too, manages to get in touch, yet his call is unnervingly brief and filled with anxiety. As pressure mounts, the police urge Amy to contact the shooter once more as part of a desperate strategy to prevent further tragedy.

When Amy arrives at the scene, her brief interaction with the shooter is abruptly interrupted by the sound of gunfire, severing her connection with both the assailant and her son. Unyielding, she positions herself by the police barricades and finally catches sight of Noah breaking free from the jeopardy surrounding them. Their emotional reunion serves as a reflective moment of joy amidst the crisis. Later, while making their way home, Amy receives a call from her mother informing her that she will be picking up Emily, which slowly helps restore a sense of normalcy to Amy’s troubled life. In the midst of this turmoil, Noah finds the strength to pen a compelling message on social media, denouncing the senseless violence of school shootings and encouraging his followers to stand resolute against such tragedies, resonating as a powerful source of hope in dark times.
