Matti Hunttala is a businessman who buys, sells, exchanges and steals to suit his plans. The officials of Hukansalmi—business representative Koistinen, municipal manager Kiiskinen and bank manager Ruotsalainen—see him as the saviour of their failing economy and factory projects. He acquires the Hukanharju ridge for free, promises factories and jobs, then sells the land to a gravel magnate and flees.
