Knox Goes Away

Knox’s plan is ultimately about sacrifice and redemption. Throughout the film, we see him grappling with his failing health and a sense of guilt over the life he has led. His diagnosis with a fatal brain disease prompts him to make a final move—protecting his son, Miles, from the consequences of his past. Knox meticulously plants false evidence to frame himself as the murderer of Palmer, knowing that the police will realize this is a setup and will eventually clear Miles. His goal is to ensure his son’s freedom, even if it means taking responsibility for the crimes himself. This act of self-sacrifice is Knox’s way of atoning for years of estrangement and guilt, trying to give Miles a fresh start.

As the story concludes, Knox’s elaborate scheme succeeds. The police uncover the truth, and Miles is released from wrongful arrest. Meanwhile, Knox is arrested, but in doing so, he confesses to all the murders he committed, including those of the goons and Annie—his attempt to protect others from his past. His mental decline accelerates, and he ends up in a prison or mental health facility with no memory of his life’s sins or his act of sacrifice. The film ends with Knox gazing out of a window, a lost man finally retreating into oblivion, symbolizing his final act of redemption—vanishing from consciousness and seeking peace in the forgetfulness that his terminal illness has brought him. In the end, Knox’s journey is about a man who, despite his brutal profession and loneliness, finds a way to do right by his son, even if it costs him everything.
