Killing Birds

Dr. Fred Brown [Robert Vaughn] returns to Louisiana after the Vietnam War to confront a personal nightmare: he finds his wife in bed with another man and, in a devastating burst of rage, kills them both along with his parents, sparing his young son. As he cleans his knife, a falcon swoops in and tears out his left eye, leaving him blind in the other. He survives the attack but ends up in a hospital, where he quietly says goodbye to the child before being placed in foster care.

Two decades pass, and a small group of college seniors—Steve Porter [Timothy W. Watts], Mary [Leslie Cumming], Paul [James Villemaire], Anne [Lara Wendel], Rob [James Sutterfield], Jennifer [Lin Gathright], and Brian [Sal Maggiore]—are assigned a peculiar mission: locate the Green-billed woodpecker, a rare bird that will be officially extinct by 1992, just four years from the present moment. Their assignment brings them into contact with the man whose history shadows them all, and the story quickly narrows its focus to Brown and the eerie turning of events around his long-abandoned home. The first day yields a grim discovery—a rotting corpse in an abandoned truck—that hints at danger far beyond a simple field study.

Once the group settles into Brown’s former residence as their makeshift base, strange phenomena begin to escalate. Doors slam shut on their own, and Steve starts seeing things that don’t belong to this world. The tension bleeds into a recurring nightmare in which Brown repeats the violence of the past, targeting Mary in the same cold manner. As the students press deeper into the aviary area Brown once used, Jennifer is chased into a tool shed by a zombie and is killed by another zombie lurking inside. The sense of peril deepens when Brian is fatally burned in a freak accident caused by a fuel leak from the generator, leaving the group reeling and Mary shaken by the connection between the dream and the real danger.

With their numbers dwindling, the survivors pull back into the camper, only to realize that Brian had hidden the keys. Rob makes a desperate attempt to hotwire the vehicle, but a zombie strikes, and in the ensuing chaos Mary is killed. They abandon the camper and retreat to Brown’s house for a last stand. Brown suffers a mild heart attack as he grasps the magnitude of what is unfolding; a door slams open, dust fills the room, and Rob is pulled into danger when his necklace becomes entangled in the generator and he is strangled by the mechanism. Paul, who had observed everything and refused to aid Rob, is forced to confront the brutal truth as he confesses to Steve and Anne that the zombies killed Rob.

A critical twist unfolds through an email Brown sends to Rob’s computer: Steve is the baby Brown spared twenty years earlier. The revelation changes the dynamics of fear and survival, as a zombie then crashes the house in a desperate assault on Anne. Steve intervenes, saving her with a shotgun but at a heavy personal cost, while Paul and Anne retreat to the attic with the others. A fourth zombie breaks in and claims Paul’s life when panic overcomes him.

Dawn brings a tense quiet as the undead assaults subside, and Steve and Anne slip away from the haunted house. They encounter Brown, who urges them to flee, insisting that the zombies were never targeting Steve and Anne specifically but were drawn to those who showed fear. The film closes on a desolate note as the credits roll and Brown’s scream echoes from the house, leaving the youths’ fates ambiguous and unsworn to fate.
