What Happens in Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie (2022) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Yuta Okkotsu, a high school student who is frequently bullied, finds his life upended when a brutal Cursed Spirit attaches itself to him after his tormentors are killed. The Jujutsu Society views him as an extraordinary danger and contemplates ending his life, but a compassionate instructor at Tokyo Jujutsu Technical High, Satoru Gojo, steps in and recruits Yuta to enroll in the school in November 2016, offering him a path to training, control, and belonging.

Yuta explains that the Cursed Spirit is Rika Orimoto, a childhood friend whom he promised to marry when they grew up. After Rika died in a freak accident, she became an overprotective spirit whose presence harms anyone who threatens him. As Yuta learns to harness this bond, he discovers a community of fellow students and their distinct abilities, including the confident Maki Zen'in, the cautious Toge Inumaki, and the sentient Panda, who together form a new circle of allies.

During an early mission with Maki, Yuta successfully summons Rika on his own for the first time, demonstrating how their intertwined fates can reinforce each other and protect the team from danger. Over the following months, Yuta grows more confident in his powers and his place within the school, drawing closer to his classmates while continuing to navigate the complexities of his curse and its unpredictable consequences.

The peace is disrupted when a high-level Curse launches a fierce assault, and the man behind the attack is Suguru Geto, a former student who defected and has already caused significant carnage. Geto tries to draw Yuta into an alliance so they can leverage Rika for his own ends, but Yuta resists after feeling misunderstood by Geto. Geto unveils a campaign to unleash a thousand Curses across the city via a dangerous portal, with the aim of removing non-sorcerer humans who he believes are unworthy of the sorcerers’ world.

Gojo realizes Geto’s true objective: to distract him and to kill Yuta so he can claim Rika for his collection of spirits. In response, Gojo orders protection for Yuta and his allies and dispatches others back to the school to stand guard on the night of Geto’s assault. The clash drives Geto to overpower the defenders, leaving Yuta conscious but overwhelmed with anger and loyalty. In a defining moment, Yuta sacrifices himself to Rika, strengthening their bond and allowing Yuta to endure the threat and drive Geto into retreat. The collision of wills prompts Gojo to intervene, ultimately ending Geto’s escalation.

Later, Gojo clarifies that Yuta’s bond with Rika stemmed from a long-buried thread of royal-bloodline dynamics within Japan’s hierarchical system, and that Yuta’s willingness to accept Rika’s memory was the key to releasing her from the curse. With continued training at the school, Yuta begins to find his footing as a sorcerer, learning to balance his own growth with the memory of Rika.

In a post-credits moment, Geto’s former ally Miguel shares a casual lunch with Yuta in Kenya, and Gojo arrives to join them, signaling that the world of sorcerers remains alive with shifting alliances and new possibilities.

Q1

Why did Rika become a Cursed Spirit after dying?

Rika became a Cursed Spirit because of the traumatic way she died and the emotional bond she shared with Yuta. After Rika died in a freak accident, her spirit remained attached to Yuta due to his childhood promise to marry her. This deep emotional connection, combined with the shock of her death, transformed her into an overprotective spirit that harms anyone who threatens Yuta.

Q2

Why was Yuta considered so dangerous by Jujutsu Society?

Yuta was considered dangerous because Rika manifested as an extraordinarily powerful Cursed Spirit. The Jujutsu Society recognized Rika's immense power and viewed Yuta as a vessel for a potentially uncontrollable curse that could cause massive destruction. This is why they initially debated executing him rather than allowing him to live.

Foreshadowing: Geto's interest in capturing Rika for his collection later confirms just how powerful she was recognized to be.

Q4

What was Geto's real plan during the city attack?

Geto's stated plan was to unleash a thousand Curses across the city to eliminate non-sorcerer humans, whom he viewed as unworthy of the sorcerers' world. However, this was a distraction. What happened when Yuta sacrificed himself to Rika?

When Yuta sacrificed himself to Rika, he fully accepted and embraced their bond rather than fighting it. Gojo revealed that Yuta's ties to royal bloodlines within Japan's historical caste system had inadvertently caused Rika's curse to form and persist. By acknowledging this connection and choosing to confront it rather than run from it, Yuta allowed Rika's spirit to finally find peace. Her passing was bittersweet, Yuta gained control and purpose, but lost his protective companion.

As one of the most powerful jujutsu sorcerers, Gojo had the authority to override the Society's execution order. He recognized that Yuta was not inherently evil but rather a victim of circumstances beyond his control, and he wanted to help Yuta find belonging at the school.

Foreshadowing: Gojo's protective attitude toward students throughout the film establishes his mentoring philosophy.

Yuta Okkotsu’s journey ends with him overcoming his deep-rooted fears and insecurities, primarily driven by the overwhelming curse Rika, who was once his childhood friend. Throughout the film, we see Yuta gradually gain confidence and control over his immense power, which initially manifests as uncontrollable rage and raw force. His growth is rooted in his relationships with his classmates, especially after a series of challenging battles that teach him to trust himself and others. The climax features Yuta facing off against Geto, who is revealed to be a cursed version of his former friend, rather than the real Geto. This curse had taken control of his body long after the actual Geto’s death, symbolizing the corrupting influence of hatred and despair. In the final battle, Yuta channels his power to vanquish this curse and to protect those he cares about. After the fight, Geto’s true body is confirmed to be dead, as Gojo reveals that Geto had sacrificed himself, fulfilling their pact. Yuta’s victory signifies his acceptance of his power and a move toward a new, brighter future.

In the closing scenes, Yuta is shown meeting Gojo again, hinting at his future role within the larger world of Jujutsu sorcerers. This sets up his involvement in future conflicts and interactions, particularly with Yuji Itadori. The ending underscores Yuta’s transformation from a scared, isolated boy into a confident sorcerer who controls his curse and fights for those he loves. The film concludes with the suggestion that Yuta’s story is only just beginning, positioning him as a vital player in the ongoing saga of Jujutsu Kaisen.
