Journey to the Center of the Earth

Professor Göteborg was murdered by Count Saknussemm, who believed he had the sole right to explore the Earth's core as a descendant of Arne Saknussemm. Göteborg was poisoned with potassium cyanide found in his beard, eliminating him as a rival in the race to reach the center of the Earth.

Count Saknussemm believes he has the hereditary right to claim the journey to the Earth's core, as he is a direct descendant of Arne Saknussemm, the original explorer who discovered the secret passage. He sees the team as trespassers stealing what he considers his family's legacy.

When their raft was caught in a massive whirlpool at the Earth's core, the intense magnetic forces were strong enough to strip metal from objects. The group was eventually pulled through to the other side of the ocean, arriving exhausted but alive at the opposite shore.

Count Saknussemm killed and ate Gertrud purely out of desperation and savagery during the expedition. This act of cruelty toward Hans Bjelke's beloved pet enrages Hans, triggering the final confrontation that leads to Saknussemm's death.

Professor Lindenbrook used gunpowder left by Saknussemm to blow up the rocks blocking their exit through a volcanic chimney. As the explosion triggered a lava eruption, the group took shelter in a large ancient altar bowl, which was violently ejected from the volcano and carried them safely to the surface.

Lindenbrook chose modesty over fame, declining the honors offered to him in Edinburgh. However, his decision to share the discovery inspired future generations of explorers to pursue their own journeys into the unknown, aligning with his belief in the spirit of discovery over personal glory.

After learning that Göteborg was murdered by Count Saknussemm, Carla decided to join the expedition. She provided essential equipment and supplies, particularly their prized Ruhmkorff lamps, on the condition that she could accompany them to preserve her late husband's legacy and reputation.

Count Saknussemm was buried alive during a struggle with Hans, who attacked him for killing Gertrud. Saknussemm was struck and crushed beneath falling stones, ending his threat to the expedition. His skeleton was later found in the Atlantis ruins, still pointing toward the exit path.

While exploring the descent, Alec became separated from the group and encountered Count Saknussemm, who tried to recruit him as a servant to help claim the core. When Alec refused, Saknussemm shot him in the arm. The sound of the gunshot allowed Lindenbrook and the others to locate Alec, leading to Saknussemm's capture.

The explorers encountered a family of giant dimetrodons, prehistoric reptiles, in the subterranean ocean. These creatures attacked the makeshift raft during their crossing, forcing the group to narrowly escape. This encounter represents one of the many dangerous prehistoric threats lurking underground.

The hidden plumb bob inside the volcanic rock contained a cryptic inscription traced to Arne Saknussemm, a scientist who had reached the Earth's core nearly a century earlier. The message described the secret passage through the volcano Snæfellsjökull in Iceland, setting off the expedition.

The discovery in Edinburgh establishes the mystery that drives the entire adventure.
