In Rameshwaram, Joe and his friends rush to join an inter-school competition. They sneak into the school after being forbidden entry, and immediately clash with Vinoth. Joe slaps Vinoth, who threatens him, setting a tense tone for the rivalry that follows.

After the clash, Joe, Santha, and Ganesh slip away from the school's gates while Vinoth's threat hangs over them. The boys escape the competition but carry the incident with them. It marks the start of a dangerous feud that resurfaces later.

As a college freshman in 2010, Joe falls for Suchithra after seeing her tears and wins her affection. He defends her from a senior, and Suchithra's family becomes wary of their relationship. As wedding preparations approach, Shruthi remains angry about the wedding, especially after Joe ties the thaali. He gets drunk, is detained by police, and is bailed out by Shruthi's father.
