Past (2008): In Rameshwaram, Rio Raj plays Joe, who, along with his friends Ganesh and Santha, tries to join an inter-school competition at a different school. Misunderstandings arise when Suchitra believes Joe harmed her father, and she tells him to leave. Heartbroken, Joe departs, turning to alcohol to cope with the pain. Time passes, and his heartbreak deepens into struggles with alcoholism. When a Facebook notification from Santha reveals that Suchitra is engaged to another man, Joe drops a shocking confession: he and Suchitra were actually married. He and his friends resolve to confront her in Kerala. Upon arriving, they find the family in mourning for Suchitra. Joe endures violence from her cousins, who blame him for her death, but Suchitra’s father intervenes, signaling that Joe was not responsible. He explains that Suchitra’s unwavering loyalty to him would have haunted her memory regardless of choices, and even if she had married Joe, the guilt of that earlier slap would linger as a painful stain on her life.

Following the funeral, Joe struggles to cope with Suchitra’s passing through more alcohol and moments of violence, lamenting that he never fully proved his innocence to her. In a desperate turn, he drugs his drink and lands in the hospital. When he returns home, his mother confronts him with disappointment over his naivety about “love at first sight” and the sacrifices the family had made. This painful arc leads Joe to a sobering realization: to bring happiness to his parents and recover from his past heartbreak, he must move forward and consider marriage as a path to stability.

Present (2019): As Joe and Shruthi prepare for their wedding, including a lively bachelor party, Shruthi’s father reassures her that Joe is the right match. Yet Shruthi remains upset, partly because Joe went ahead with the wedding despite her request to cancel, especially after he tied the thaali around her neck. Before their first night together, Santha reveals a crucial truth: he was the one who answered Shruthi’s call to cancel the wedding, explaining the reason for her anger during the ceremony. Shruthi begins to withdraw, and Joe’s pursuit of reconciliation is complicated by a night of drunken trouble during a routine police stop, for which Shruthi’s father ultimately bailes him out. On the ride home, Shruthi’s father suggests a job for Joe at their college, hoping distance from Shruthi might ease the strain on their marriage.

Back home, Shruthi’s anger shifts toward a different tact, and she confronts Joe about his actions. He turns to his sister-in-law for insight, and through her conversations with Shruthi’s colleagues at the college, Joe learns that Shruthi maintains a professional veneer but has a guarded personal life. A misunderstanding involving campus security, Padma, and Shruthi prompts a quiet apology from Shruthi to Padma, signaling a softening attitude. In a tender moment, Shruthi leans on Padma’s shoulder, regretful for her earlier behavior toward Joe. The shift comes after Renu reveals that Joe had been drunk the night Shruthi called to cancel the wedding and that Santha answered instead. Joe had hoped to discuss this with Shruthi for a long time.

As the school culturals pass, Joe searches for Shruthi, who has been dealing with issues involving her ex, Shakthi, and her sister Renu. Shruthi admits that there is another man in her life, and Joe resolves to find him for her sake. The couple returns home to a warm reception, but Joe excuses himself to the playground where Praveen drives Shruthi. On the way, Shruthi asks about Suchitra’s fate, and Praveen reveals that Suchitra had taken her own life, a tragedy that had deeply affected those closest to her. Praveen suggests Shruthi reunite with the man she’s been avoiding, hinting at a finality that isn’t easy to accept. When Shruthi finally confronts Joe, she discovers the truth: the man she has been seeking is Vinoth—the same Vinoth from 2008, the one she had admired in school and whom Joe had once saved from harm. The revelation is jarring: Shruthi had been seeking her rescuer for a decade, not knowing that her rescuer and husband were one and the same. In a moving twist, the two lovers are finally reunited, discovering that their long search has brought them back to each other at last. Their bond, tested by time, misunderstandings, and past heartbreak, ends on a note of hopeful reunion, with the sense that their shared history has prepared them to move forward together.
