Melissa overdoses after her drug-dealing boyfriend situation and is rushed to a hospital. The Compton family faces the shock of her condition as they worry about her safety and future.

Bill goes to Frank Russo's apartment to retrieve Melissa's belongings and confronts Russo. In a fit of rage he kills Russo, the first murder that sets off a chain of unintended consequences.

To cover his crime, Bill stuffs a bag full of drugs into his car and pretends it was stolen during a robbery. The act leaves him anxious and unsteady as he drives away.

To calm his nerves, Bill stops at a nearby bar and tries to steady his breath. There he overhears Joe Curran ranting about hippies, and Bill blurts out that he has killed one, which Joe initially reacts to with admiration but Bill later calls a joke.

A few days later, a news report about a drug dealer's murder is followed by a call from Joe Curran. They meet, and Joe expresses admiration for Bill, easing his initial wariness about blackmail.

Bill and Joan share an awkward dinner at Joe's house with Joe's wife Mary Lou. Joe shows off his gun collection, signaling a new, troubling familiarity between the families.

Melissa escapes from the hospital and returns to the family apartment, where she overhears her parents discussing the murder. She confronts Bill with a chilling question about her own safety and fate.

Bill and Joe search the streets for Melissa and end up at a bar in downtown Manhattan where they meet a group of hippies. They invite the hippies back to their apartment, where everyone takes drugs and the girls begin to have sex with Bill and Joe.

The group leaves with Bill's bag of drugs and both men's wallets, while Joe beats a girl who reveals that the boyfriends visit an upstate commune. The bar's dangerous energy gives way to a tense plan to go to the commune.

Bill and Joe drive to the upstate commune armed with rifles, closing in on a confrontation that will blur moral lines even further. The journey marks a point of no return for both men.

At the commune, Joe opens fire on the hippies and urges Bill to join him, testing Bill's resolve. The escalating violence reveals how far the men have fallen from their former selves.

In the final moment of the bloodshed, Bill shoots and kills Melissa, his own daughter, during the chaotic confrontation at the commune. The act shatters the family and completes the tragedy.
