The figure of Jánošík has inspired many Slovak and Polish legends, books and films. Folklore casts him as a Robin‑hood‑type highwayman who robbed nobles and gave the loot to the poor, a tale that spread to Silesia, Moravia and Bohemia. Though the historical man differed, 19th‑century writers and activists solidified his image, spreading it across Slovakia and among Gorals and Polish tourists in Podhale north of the Tatras.
