In the end, Joe Gardner is given a second chance at life after dying just before his big jazz break. Through his journey in the afterlife and beyond, he learns that life’s true meaning isn’t about achieving fame or success, but about appreciating the small, everyday moments. This shift in perspective is symbolized when a maple leaf seed lands in his hand, and he begins to truly notice and value the little things around him. Thanks to his time with 22, a soul who initially lacked a zest for life, Joe discovers that the joy of living comes from embracing the present and finding fulfillment in the everyday. As a result, he’s returned to Earth, not just as a man chasing a career, but as someone who understands that life itself is the real gift.

The film also leaves some questions open. 22, having experienced a newfound love for life, departs for Earth, where she is likely to thrive now that she has learned to appreciate its wonders. The curious case of the cat surviving after Joe’s departure may be explained by a new soul or some other supernatural mechanism that isn’t fully explained. Joe’s return to the You Seminar involves his music, particularly his piano, through which he enters the Zone and follows 22 back to his goal. The You Seminar itself reveals that its purpose isn’t to assign a specific purpose or “spark” but rather to prepare souls for life by helping them find their unique identities. Ultimately, the message of Soul is that life’s true value lies in the experiences we cherish, the moments we live, and the love we share, rather than in external accomplishments. It’s a reminder that happiness and fulfillment are found within, and that sometimes, we just need to learn to see the beauty in the small things around us.
