A journalist is assigned to interview an eccentric anthropologist who has unearthed the skeleton of Jörg Jenatsch, the famed 17th‑century freedom fighter murdered in 1639. Initially indifferent, he uncovers unflattering facts about the hero and begins having vivid visions of the era, driving his investigation to the point where his personal life collapses and he is drawn to the fatal carnival where Jenatsch met his end.
