Jack is a timid limousine driver who shares a home and job with his uncle. As fate would have it, his close friend Clyde, along with Clyde’s wife Lucy, invite Jack over for dinner to meet Connie, Lucy’s new coworker who struggles with intimacy issues.

During their initial encounter, Jack becomes smitten with Connie and is determined to learn how to swim so that he can take her out on a boat when summer arrives. With Clyde’s encouragement, Jack embarks on swimming lessons, eager to impress her. However, as summer seems too far off, Jack thinks that arranging a dinner would be the perfect way to connect with Connie. When Connie reveals that nobody has ever prepared a meal for her, Jack is inspired to step up as the chef for the evening. The catch is that Jack has no culinary skills, prompting Clyde to introduce him to a friend of Lucy’s who is a professional chef to teach him the ropes.

As Jack juggles the challenges of mastering cooking and swimming, he inadvertently gains insight into the complexities of Clyde and Lucy’s marriage, which is burdened by sporadic infidelities. As the cracks in their relationship become evident, Jack and Connie’s bond deepens; Connie’s initial mistrust begins to dissolve, while Jack grows more confident in his budding romance and his aspirations for a dream career.

In a poignant conclusion, Jack and Connie stroll away happily, leaving Clyde, now newly single, to watch from a distance with mixed feelings.
