In the bustling metropolis of New York City, aspiring singer/songwriters Chuck Clarke and Lyle Rogers are captivated by the dream of musical success. They envision themselves as legends in the music industry, inspired by the likes of Simon and Garfunkel.

Determined to make their mark, Chuck invites talent agent Marty Freed to their performance at Song Mart. However, they are devastated when Marty criticizes their lack of stage presence and suggests they need to enhance their act.

Under the name 'Rogers and Clarke', the duo performs a familiar song at a local nightclub, complete with awkward dance moves. The crowd responds with boos, but Marty surprisingly offers them performance bookings, one in Honduras and the other in Morocco.

Over drinks at a nearby bar, Chuck and Lyle contemplate Marty's proposition while reflecting on their journey. This moment serves as a turning point, solidifying their decision to pursue their music careers despite the setbacks they've faced.

Flashbacks reveal Lyle's struggles five months prior, where he juggled driving an ice cream truck and writing lyrics. His wife Willa grows increasingly frustrated with his fixation on music, leading to their eventual separation.

While Chuck entertains patrons at a restaurant, he receives a note from Lyle praising his performance. However, Chuck's relationship with girlfriend Carol suffers due to his dedication to music, ultimately resulting in her leaving him.

In a moment of despair, Chuck threatens suicide to draw Lyle's attention, leading to a dramatic rooftop confrontation with the police. Rabbi Pierce intervenes, helping to de-escalate the situation and guiding Chuck back inside.

After resolving their personal issues, Chuck and Lyle, excited for their new adventure, travel to Morocco. There, they perform for an audience, only to find themselves inadvertently caught up in a chaotic and dangerous situation.

At the Ishtar airport, Shirra convinces Chuck to switch passports and suitcases, emphasizing the life-and-death nature of her request. This leads Chuck to remain in Ishtar while Lyle heads to Marrakesh, unaware of the unfolding intrigue.

In Marrakesh, Lyle meets Jim Harrison, who reveals he is a CIA operative. As they navigate the world of espionage, Lyle's solo performance gains little attention until Chuck reinvigorates the act, causing their star to rise.

The duo finds themselves in over their heads when Lyle inadvertently gets involved with Shirra and the CIA's schemes. Their comedic misadventures lead to a chaotic chase across the desert filled with absurdity and danger.

While negotiating a deal for a blind camel, Lyle discovers Shirra's true intentions involving a crucial ancient map. Compelled to assist her, he finds himself navigating a dangerous game with rogue CIA agents.

As the duo faces kidnappers and a ruthless emir, their quick wits allow them to turn the tables on the CIA. In a thrilling climax, they manage to outsmart their adversaries and secure the ancient map's safe return.

Returning to New York City with their tumultuous adventure behind them, Chuck and Lyle reflect on their experiences. Their journey not only strengthens their friendship but also marks a significant evolution in their musical careers.

The film concludes with talent agent Marty promoting Chuck and Lyle's music as their 'Live in Concert' album is showcased at Sam Goody. This final moment symbolizes their triumph, celebrating their growth in the music world.
