Tony Stark travels to Afghanistan with Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes to showcase the new 'Jericho' missile. This trip marks a significant turning point, as Tony is ambushed by the terrorist group known as the Ten Rings, leading to his capture and serious injury.

After being ambushed, Tony finds himself held captive in a cave by the Ten Rings. There, he realizes that his own company's weapons are being used against him, and he forms a bond with fellow captive Yinsen, who saves his life with a makeshift electromagnet.
