To calm the men, Agamemnon allows the temple to be violated by taking sheep, leading to the accidental killing of the sacred deer. Calchas denounces the act and demands atonement. The sacred ground has been defiled, heightening the crisis for the Greek cause.

Calchas delivers what is believed to be Artemis' oracle: a sacrifice to atone for the defilement, specifically Agamemnon's first-born daughter, Iphigenia. The revelation unsettles the troops, who realize the war hinges on a terrible price. Hope for a quick wind lift clashes with the horror of the proposed act.

To secure the sacrifice, Agamemnon dispatches a letter to Clytemnestra in Argos, asking her to send Iphigenia to Aulis under the pretense of a forthcoming marriage to Achilles.
