In the evocative setting of Calcutta during the intense monsoon season of 1937, the film delves into a world where disease and despair ripple through society. At the heart of this story is Anne-Marie Stretter, played by Delphine Seyrig, the wife of the French ambassador to India. Originally from Venice, where she was raised as Ana-Maria Guardi and nurtured a promising talent as a musician, she abandoned her musical dreams early after her marriage at age eighteen. Her life took her from her birthplace of Venice to Savannakhet in Laos as a colonial official’s wife, a period marked by discontent and yearning she could not escape from. After leaving her first husband following their time together, she met and married Ambassador Stretter, settling in various Asian cities for seventeen years before finally establishing herself in Calcutta.

Anne-Marie’s life in Calcutta is characterized by a sense of stagnation and underlying dissatisfaction, despite her involvement in a discreet affair with Michael Richardson, played by Claude Mann, a businessman with whom she shares a complex, emotionally charged connection. Her husband, although aware of this affair, tolerates it, perhaps unable or unwilling to confront the deeper issues at play. The oppressive heat and relentless monsoon weather symbolize the suffocating atmosphere she navigates daily.

The story’s pivotal scenes occur during a reception at the French embassy, where notable figures gather, including the recently appointed Austrian ambassador and the Vice-Consul of Lahore. The Vice-Consul, portrayed as a troubled man who has a dark history of shooting leprosy patients and attempting suicide in Lahore, is a character who has never been with a woman. His infatuation with Anne-Marie becomes apparent as he dances with her and pleads to spend the night with her, only to be ultimately rejected. In a raw display of emotion, he loudly confesses his love in front of others, leading to his removal from the embassy in a scene filled with tension and regret.

The following day, Anne-Marie, Michael, the Austrian ambassador, Georges Crawn (a close confidant of Anne-Marie), and a young embassy guest head towards the delta islands, where the ambassador’s villa is located, seeking a respite from their troubled lives. Meanwhile, the Vice-Consul, persistently following them, joins the group later at the “Prince of Wales” hotel for dinner. Earlier, Anne-Marie and Michael had embarked on a shared act of despair, attempting to end their lives and making a pact to respect one another’s decisions should they choose to die. That night, amid the heat and emotional turmoil, Anne-Marie spends the night alone on a park bench, and her abandoned coat is later discovered on the beach, symbolizing her complete withdrawal from her previous life.

The narrative reaches its poignant climax with the Vice-Consul resigning shortly after these events. Meanwhile, Michael Richardson departs for England following Anne-Marie’s tragic death and eventually passes away there as well. Her story embodies themes of love, disillusionment, mental anguish, and the devastating effects of isolation amid a backdrop of societal decay and moral ambiguity.
