In the summer of 1889, the fearless tightrope walker Hedvig Jensen and Swedish lieutenant Sixten Sparre slip away to the quiet Danish countryside to abandon their old lives. She leaves the traveling circus where she is the star attraction, and he deserts his regiment, along with the life he once knew as a military man and husband. They keep their whereabouts private to shield themselves from the scorn of society and to dodge Sparre’s pursuing unit. To Hedvig, this secluded romance feels like a reclaiming of identity, a chance to be known simply as Hedvig rather than the stage persona Elvira Madigan.
Their secrecy frays when a hotel signs their fate to a clever, quiet alert. A wandering, kindly hotel cook manages to help them slip away just as authorities close in, yet the fragile hiding place is breached when the discarded buttons from Sparre’s military uniform surface in a field, betraying their trail. Into the moral fog steps Kristoffer, a friend from Sparre’s regiment, who tracks them down and tries to pull Sparre back toward the life he once led. He tells Sparre that the world still expects him to stand by duty, but Sparre’s response is stubborn and hopeful in its own way: he believes he has changed, that Hedvig has reshaped him, and that he now stands with the women rather than on the side of soldiers. The two men exchange a tense, poignant confrontation, with Kristoffer pressing one last plea, but Sparre refuses to return, convinced that Hedvig has given him a new compass for living.
What follows is a summer of fragile illusion gradually giving way to hardship. The couple moves from one hotel and inn to another, their funds dwindling as money must be earned by any means. Sparre gamble[s] to pad their pockets, while Hedvig lends her artistry to support them—performing for a party and even selling a drawing of herself by the painter Toulouse-Lautrec. She urges Sparre to seek lawful work, but his status as a deserter makes that path seem impossible. A rift opens between them after a harsh disagreement about their precarious circumstances, yet they eventually find their footing again and try to move forward.
As hunger gnaws at them, both become more desperate, and the prospect of an end weighs heavily in the air. They agree, almost as a whispered pact, that they will meet death rather than continue to live with the fear and shame that surrounds them. They set out on one final picnic, Sparre tucking a pistol into the basket as a grim talisman. The moment arrives with a quiet, devastating tenderness: Sparre cannot bring himself to shoot Hedvig at first, but when the time comes, he musters the resolve to honor their pact. Hedvig, wild with the memory of their early joys—flickers of the happiness she once shared with him—appears to smile as she chases a butterfly in the fields. In that fragile serenity, Sparre pulls the trigger, ending her life, and then ends his own. The act is carried out beyond the reach of the camera, and only the echo of gunshots lingers in the silence that follows.
