During a night at the opera, Estelle Henderson Kat Hawks is embarrassed by her drunken fiancé, John Evans Andrew Bowen, but she is also drawn to a dark, mysterious young man in the audience. After the performance, John attacks Estelle’s father, Dr. George Henderson, but is stopped by the enigmatic stranger who introduces himself as Alex Stone Daniel Goddard. Alex and Estelle share a dinner and quickly fall in love, setting the stage for a dangerous collision between romance and a hidden world.
Alex reveals that he is part of a vampire coven, and he explains to Estelle and her father that he is tired of the emptiness of living as a savage beast in eternal darkness. He longs for a mortal life with Estelle, a life he believes might be possible if he can change his fate. Dr. Henderson, a renowned medical researcher, hears him out and becomes intrigued by the possibility that taming vampiric biology could advance his own immortality research, even as he remains cautious about the moral consequences.
The stakes are raised when Henderson’s research is funded by Victor Price Eric Etebari, the head of a powerful organization known as the Illuminati. Price hopes to use the research to achieve immortality for himself and his network, while the Illuminati also engages in the grim practice of harvesting people for spare body parts. An informer brings Price news of Alex’s case, and Price agrees to let Henderson continue only if Alex agrees to grant him immortality. Henderson is initially skeptical, but the possibility of breakthroughs—and the shadowy power behind them—pulls him in.
Alex resists at first, but Estelle’s enigmatic suggestion to “take advantage” of the Illuminati’s power nudges him toward a risky plan. > take advantage of the Illuminati’s power
Meanwhile, Interpol investigators bring in Marshall Pope Matthias Hues, a vampire hunter, as police uncover a string of vampire attacks. With Pope’s help, the police manage to kill the other vampires who lack Alex’s unique power, though Pope himself is killed in the process. In a separate crackdown, Price’s associate Rex is arrested for a drug operation and, under pressure, reveals Price’s role, prompting surveillance of the Illuminati.
Price and his cohorts return to their mansion, taking Estelle with them. Steven Mills, one of Price’s henchmen, tries to stake Alex but is overpowered. Henderson and Alex rush to confront Price, who flaunts wealth and power to sway Estelle. As the police storm in, Alex uses his power of disappearance to vanish along with the Illuminati-created vampires. The scene then cuts to a surreal moment where Alex is shown leaving the Illuminati to spend eternity with their kind in outer space, only to return to Earth.
More than a year later, a news report notes the Hendersons’ acquittal in the Illuminati trial, the unexplained disappearance of the Illuminati and their funds, a sharp drop in crime, and the absence of further vampire sightings. In the final turn, Estelle has seized the Illuminati accounts and donated the money to a charitable cause, and she now lives with a non-vampire Alex in a large house, suggesting a quiet, reimagined future rooted in a rebalanced reality.
