Louis XI, disguised as a commoner, prowls the streets of Paris to sniff out conspiracies. In a tavern he catches the audacious poet François Villon proclaiming he could rule better, which amuses and irritates the monarch. Louis appoints Villon Grand Constable; the poet throws himself into his duties, falls for a charming lady‑in‑waiting, and is forced to flee when the king suddenly orders his execution.
