Robert Benchley humorously examines how various situations affect eating and digestion, using his befuddled everyman Joe Doakes as an illustration. He notes that stress from bad news, love, or fear, improper posture or sitting crookedly, snacking between meals, eating on a picnic or in bed with a tray, and sharing a table with staring strangers can all hinder digestion, and that an empty plate makes digestion impossible.
