Sergei Vasilyev’s first solo directing effort, after years co‑directing with his late brother Georgi, was made while he headed Leningrad Film Studios and had to include propaganda. Set in 1887, it dramatizes the Battle of Shipka Pass, emphasizing Soviet solidarity and the bravery of Bulgarian volunteers who aided Russian forces. American reviewers praised its storytelling but said a widescreen (Cinemascope) format would have been more effective.
