Scott Voss, a former collegiate wrestler, grapples with disillusionment in his role as a biology teacher at Wilkinson High School. At 42 years old, he feels unfulfilled and exhibits a lack of enthusiasm, often arriving late to class.

Principal Duke Betcher prioritizes funding for the school's football team over the struggling music program led by Marty Streb. As budget cuts threaten Marty's job, Scott begins to realize the dire situation faced by his colleague and the students.

Motivated by the urgency to save Marty's job, Scott decides to raise $48,000 by the end of the school year. He begins seeking options for extra work, starting with a tough conversation with his brother Eric about his financial limitations.

Scott takes on a tutoring role for Niko, one of his students who faces deportation if he fails his citizenship test. This experience reveals Niko's background as a former mixed martial arts fighter, providing Scott with a new perspective.

While watching UFC fights, Scott gets inspired by the fighter payouts and sees an opportunity to earn money. He decides to enter the MMA ring, a surprising decision given his age and previous disinterest in combat sports.

Despite initial doubts, Niko agrees to train Scott after recognizing his determination. This marks the beginning of Scott’s journey into the world of mixed martial arts, combining their efforts to help both Niko and the school.

Scott begins participating in small unsanctioned bouts, earning $750 for each victory. He adopts 'Here Comes the Boom' as his entrance music, although he has to incorporate Marty's intimidation tactics as his matches progress.
