It’s the final day at Roosevelt High School, and chaos reigns as seniors ramp up their antics, pulling pranks on their fellow students and teachers alike. English teacher Andy Campbell finds himself feeling helpless when a student on a scooter steals his parking spot. Meanwhile, history teacher Ron Strickland, known as the most intimidating teacher in the school, catches two boys swapping a prized baseball bat for a computer in an effort to watch adult content. With a stern command, he insists they return the bat and leave the premises.
As tensions rise, several teachers are anxious about evaluations that will determine their job security, particularly Campbell, who is soon to welcome his second child with his wife Maggie. In a moment of embarrassment, his class is prank-called, with students drawing inappropriate images on the board. His worries deepen when guidance counselor Holly Grossman informs him that some of his peers have been fired, leaving him concerned about his own future.
In the teachers’ lounge, Campbell, Holly, and their colleague Coach Crawford discuss the grim reality of job losses when a long-serving teacher is shown the door. Strickland arrives, unamused by a faulty coffee machine, which Campbell attempts to fix. The mood shifts drastically when Campbell stumbles upon a student engaging in an inappropriate act in the restroom, leading Ms. Monet to mistakenly label him a pervert.
Strickland, needing assistance with AV equipment, inadvertently pulls Campbell into another prank as students set up paint bombs. In a fit of rage against the classroom chaos, Strickland’s ferocity is palpable when he destroys a student’s desk with a fire ax, leading both teachers to the principal’s office, where Strickland’s anger grows towards Campbell for not backing him up during the confrontation.
Word spreads throughout the school about a challenge issued by Strickland to Campbell for a fight after school, raising concerns among the students as rumors about Strickland’s past swirl. Holly and Crawford bet on Strickland’s victory, while Campbell tries to navigate his way through the situation as tensions build. Ms. Monet, having her own preconceptions about Campbell, suggests Strickland bring a knife to the showdown.
Desperate to regain control, Campbell approaches student Neil for a favor, offering him a MacBook Pro for a favorable retraction concerning the incident, leading him on a frantic quest to purchase the laptop while handling family obligations. As the fight looms, Campbell attempts to clear the air with Strickland but ends up complicating matters further.
Feeling cornered, Campbell plans to frame Strickland by planting drugs in his classroom. However, their scheme goes hilariously awry as they both end up arrested when their elaborate plan unwinds, revealing a misunderstanding about the drugs involved. Strickland confronts Campbell about his cowardice, leading to a grudging understanding between the two educators.
After a frantic realignment of priorities, Campbell manages to make it to his daughter Ally’s performance, where she takes the stage with determination, delivering a confident rendition that catches the attention of the crowd. The day culminates with the anticipated fight between Campbell and Strickland, a spectacle that draws throngs of students, cheers, and an unexpected turn of events, showcasing Campbell’s tenacity.
In a chain of bizarre occurrences, the fight culminates in a moment of clarity as Campbell learns that Maggie is going into labor, prompting an urgent rush to the hospital where he finally resolves to stand tall.
By summer, with newfound confidence, the Campbells host a barbecue where Ally is thriving among her peers. However, Campbell learns that the fallout from the school fight requires him and Strickland to return to their posts under new terms. As the new school year begins, they step into their roles with fresh respect and camaraderie, ready to tackle the challenges of teaching and mentorship as they collectively address the issues of bullying. The new alliance between the two teachers becomes a hallmark for their students, signaling a strong beginning for the upcoming academic year.
