In 1931 Paris, Anaïs Nin is emotionally and financially supported by her husband Hugo, a British banker. Despite his unwavering support, Anaïs finds herself longing for more dynamic friendships and creative encounters outside her conventional marriage.

Hugo introduces Anaïs to American novelist Henry Miller, who is struggling to get published due to the explicit content of his work. Anaïs is immediately intrigued by Henry and decides to loan him her typewriter.
