In 1933, Lewis Tater leaves his family home in Iowa to attend the University of Titan in Nevada, hoping to soak up the western atmosphere and begin his dream of writing westerns. He imagines immersing himself in frontier life as a path to literary success. The journey sets up his pursuit of an authentic western backdrop.

He arrives in Titan, Nevada, to find there is no real university; instead he encounters a mail-order correspondence course scam run by two crooks operating out of a local hotel. The disappointment pushes him to confront the harsh western dream he's chasing. This moment marks the film's pivot from naive aspiration to survival in a fraud-ridden frontier town.

At the hotel, one of the crooks launches an attempted robbery against Lewis as he tries to sleep there for the night. He narrowly escapes and fights for his life, showing his growing grit. The encounter demonstrates the danger lurking in this new frontier town.

Lewis escapes the crooks by stealing their car, intending to flee the danger. The vehicle soon runs out of gas, leaving him stranded and more vulnerable. The sense of isolation deepens as he ventures into the desert with only a suitcase and his courage.

Later that day, he accepts a lift with the cowboy actors to Los Angeles, joining their journey toward opportunity. The road trip marks the shift from survival to pursuing acting. The group treats him as a hopeful addition to their production.

After applying for work at Tumbleweed, Lewis gets a crucial recommendation from Howard Pike, a crusty old extra, pointing him to the Rio, a western-themed restaurant. The referral opens the door to a real break in the tough job market. This moment introduces key mentors who help him break into acting.

While washing dishes at the Rio, Lewis is noticed by the Tumbleweed crew and is mentored by Howard to become an actor. The environment at the restaurant becomes his unexpected training ground, turning him from a hopeful cook into a potential performer. This mentorship propels him toward a formal role.

After proving himself as a stuntman, unit manager Kessler offers Lewis a speaking role, marking a major step toward professional recognition. He earns respect through demonstrated courage and skill. The moment signals his transition from background performer to featured actor.

Tater falls in love with Miss Trout, the spunky script girl, adding a personal stake to his professional ambitions. The romance provides emotional color to his new life in Hollywood. It also foreshadows the complications of fame and loyalty as the plot unfolds.

Meanwhile, the two crooks who ran the scam discover that Lewis is in Los Angeles and track him down to retrieve the safe-box containing their money. The pursuit raises the stakes as his newfound success draws dangerous attention. The tension culminates in a confrontation between crime and cinema.
