Adrian Towers, newly pregnant and recently separated, begins to cross paths with Bill Grant, a successful television producer. They start to develop a cautious, growing interest despite her unsettled divorce.

On a camping trip with Bill's two sons, Adrian grows more fond of children and of Bill. Bill shares that he once feared fatherhood but now embraces it, hinting at potential romance.

Bill attempts to kiss Adrian, signaling his growing affection. She resists, noting it is too soon given her pending divorce and impending delivery, and she worries about complicated feelings.

The next morning, Tommy nearly gets hit by a car. Adrian pushes him away and is struck herself, leading to hospitalization and a risk of miscarriage. Bill rushes to her side.

Bill learns of Adrian's pregnancy and offers support, though he confesses fear of falling in love again and worry that Adrian might return to Steven.

Adrian's lawyer reveals Steven has no intention of seeing the baby and tries to force support via a contract that would absolve him of responsibility. Adrian refuses to sign, insisting she must have contact with her child.

Crushed by Steven's stance, Adrian finds comfort in Bill's support and the two begin a romantic relationship, with a mutual sense of commitment to the unborn child.

Adrian spots Steven in a restaurant and confronts him, but he refuses to speak to her. Bill advises her to accept that there is no future with Steven.

As contractions begin again, Adrian is hospitalized for premature labor. The looming birth accelerates decisions about her future.

Adrian decides to go through with the divorce. Bill proposes marriage, and she accepts, though she makes clear she is not yet over Steven.

On Christmas Eve, Adrian gives birth to a son named Sam. Steven briefly agrees to meet his child and hints at renewing their relationship for the baby’s sake, but Adrian rejects him.

After witnessing Steven with their family, Bill keeps his distance but is later reunited with Adrian as they marry, with Adrian affirming that Bill is the one for her.
