In 1953, Ainun was paired with Rudy by a teacher at her school in Bandung. Rudy was known as an exceptionally bright student, and the pair quickly discovered mutual respect that blossomed into deep affection. Years later in 1962, they reunited when Rudy accompanied his brother to an appointment, and they began to fall in love, setting the stage for their shared future.

The initial school matching in 1953 planted the seeds for their lifelong partnership, which the 1962 reunion would later confirm.

Rudy returned to Indonesia with the ambition to transform his homeland through science and engineering. After completing his Doctor of Engineering degree in Germany, he wanted to apply his knowledge to develop Indonesian technology and industry, ultimately pitching an Indonesian-made aircraft to the national aircraft industry.

His early ambition to transform Indonesia through engineering was established from their school days, driving his decision to return.

The IPTN N-250 was Rudy's blueprint for an Indonesian-made aircraft that gained President Suharto's approval and successfully completed its maiden flight on August 10, 1995. However, the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the May 1998 riots caused public interest to wane, and the project was abandoned after Suharto's resignation and the subsequent political turmoil.

The maiden flight in 1995 represented a hopeful milestone, but the economic crisis looming in 1997 would ultimately derail this national achievement.

Ainun secretly battled ovarian cancer while continuing to support Rudy's ambitions. She kept her illness hidden while balancing her work as a physician and caring for their family, only revealing her condition when it became critical. She continued supporting Rudy through his demanding roles as cabinet minister, Vice President, and President, prioritizing his national duties over her own health.

Ainun's secret battle was foreshadowed by her quiet strength and unwavering support throughout Rudy's rising political career.

Following the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the May 1998 riots, President Suharto resigned amid widespread public pressure. As Vice President at the time, Rudy Habibie automatically ascended to the presidency, leading Indonesia through the Reform era. He served until resigning about a year later.

The political turmoil that ousted Suharto created the opportunity for Habibie's brief presidency.

Ainun asked for a honeymoon after Rudy became Vice President, but his oath of office imposed an extremely demanding schedule that left them both sleep-deprived. The plans were postponed due to the national crisis at the time. They finally managed to take their honeymoon together after Rudy resigned from the presidency.

The honeymoon delay highlighted the sacrifice demanded by Rudy's public service role.

The couple had two sons. Their first son Ilham Akbar Habibie was born during their time in Hamburg, Germany. Their second son Thareq Kemal Habibie was born while Rudy was pursuing his engineering career and before his political rise.

The birth of their children during Rudy's studies in Germany marked key moments that solidified their partnership.

Ainun passed away on May 22, 2010, in Munich, Germany, at Universitätsklinikum Großhadern. She had traveled there for cancer treatment after her illness progressed to Stage IV. Rudy was by her side before she died.

The trip to Munich for treatment was the culmination of years of her hidden battle with cancer.

Rudy resigned from the presidency about a year after taking office, acknowledging the toll that the presidency had taken on him and his family. The resignation came during a period of intense criticism and accusations of corruption directed at him during the Reform era, combined with the personal burden of Ainun's worsening cancer.

The weight of both political criticism and Ainun's secret illness created the pressure that led to his decision.

The May 1998 riots were triggered by the Asian financial crisis of 1997, which caused severe economic hardship, unemployment, and political unrest in Indonesia. These demonstrations ultimately led to President Suharto's resignation and Rudy Habibie's succession to the presidency.
