In “What’s After the Movie,” the story spans over two decades, beginning in 1998 in the city of Guntur, where brothers Dokka Marx Babu and Lenin Babu—notorious local hooligans—commit a violent act that changes lives forever. They set fire to Bhogineni Satyam’s mirchi factory, causing chaos and destruction. Amidst the turmoil, Satyam, played by Prakash Raj, faces a tragic turn when his brother-in-law, Rangam, inadvertently kills Lenin during the riot. Satyam takes the blame for the incident, accepting a 12-year prison sentence to shield his family. The explosion not only lands Satyam behind bars but also leaves his son, Ramana, with partial vision loss in his left eye due to the blast. The fallout leads to heartbreak as Vasundhara (played by Ramya Krishnan), Satyam’s wife, leaves him and moves back to Hyderabad, eventually marrying her cousin, Narayana.
Fast forward to 2023, Vasundhara ascends to a position of political power as the Minister of Law, supported by her father, Vyra Venkata Swamy. Her rise to prominence is marred by looming threats, as her past and her son, Ramana, become vulnerable to political rivals. A formidable opponent, Kata Madhu, threatens to reveal Ramana’s identity, which could jeopardize Vasundhara’s career. Under intense pressure from her father, Venkata Swamy, Ramana is coerced into signing a legal document severing all ties with Vasundhara. However, Ramana’s refusal to give up on his mother compels him to seek her out. As tensions escalate, Venkata Swamy’s lawyer, Pani (played by Murali Sharma), along with his aide Balu (played by Vennela Kishore), attempt to manipulate Ramana into submission. In a desperate move, Venkata Swamy fabricates a false FIR accusing Ramana of property damage and assault, aiming to entrap him further.
Amidst this turmoil, Ramana receives support from Balu, who empathizes with his plight and tries to help him secure bail. Despite some progress, the conflict reaches a boiling point when Ramana directly challenges Venkata Swamy. During a heated confrontation with his mother, Vasundhara, he ends up slapping her, which forces Ramana to sign the document relinquishing his claim to her. Seizing the moment, Kata Madhu exposes Ramana’s true identity to the media, revealing his familial ties to Vasundhara. The revelation causes chaos, especially when Venkata Swamy’s efforts to arrest Ramana fail. From prison, Satyam begins to reveal painful truths about Vasundhara’s past decisions, including her role in the wrongful conviction of Satyam and her choices that led her away from her family.
Tragedy strikes again when Ramana is kidnapped by Gelatin Babji, portrayed as a threat and a mysterious contract killer. Babji discloses that Venkata Swamy and Narayana had conspired to have Ramana killed. During this period, Vasundhara is involved in a severe accident when she is hit by a lorry, leading to her hospitalization. Ramana, frantic to see her alive, learns from Venkata Swamy that the attack was part of a larger conspiracy involving Hari Das, a troublesome figure, and Kata Madhu, orchestrated to eliminate her under the pretense of an accident. Driven by a sense of duty and anger, Venkata Swamy urges Ramana to act decisively—prompting him to kill Hari Das and Kata Madhu to prove his loyalty and claim his identity as Vasundhara’s son.
As Ramana investigates further, he uncovers shocking truths about the betrayals of the past. Hari Das, initially believed to be plotting against Vasundhara, confesses that his vendetta is actually directed at Venkata Swamy, with whom he had a bitter falling out over a business arrangement twenty-five years earlier. The story reveals a web of deceit involving political ambitions and personal revenge, with Narayana and Venkata Swamy orchestrating the fake accident on Vasundhara to further their own agendas.
In the climax, during a political event meant to commemorate Raja Gopal, Vasundhara’s son with Narayana, secrets are revealed that threaten to topple the entire scheme. Narayana confesses that Gopal is not biologically their son but was adopted by Vasundhara to disguise her relationship with Ramana, and they’ve never actually consummated their marriage—they simply live apart. This revelation exposes a larger conspiracy involving Vasundhara’s sacrifices, her estranged family, and her fight to protect her son.
Ramana, overwhelmed by the revelations, is initially filled with rage towards his grandfather, Venkata Swamy, but Vasundhara intervenes, urging him to understand the complex web of family secrets and sacrifices. In the end, mother and son return to Guntur, where they reunite with Satyam and Bujji, seeking to rebuild their lives amidst the upheaval. The film paints a vivid picture of loyalty, betrayal, and the hope for reconciliation amid a backdrop of political manipulation and personal sacrifice, showing that sometimes, what’s “after the movie” can be just as dramatic and emotional as the story itself.
