Selma Lagerlöf’s The Tale of a Manor underpins Gunnar Hede, raised by a mother intent on preserving the family’s wealth. He idolizes his grandfather, an itinerant violinist who earned reindeer wealth, and falls for a troupe’s violinist. He abandons his inheritance, tries a reindeer trade that fails; the troupe’s violinist returns, restoring his sanity.
